Default Viper Alarm System?

How good are these systems? I haven't heard much about alarm systems and I was at best buy and was thinking about getting one.

I like mine but it didn't keep someone from breaking into my car while I was at work. My car was about 3/4 of a mile in a parking garage downtown so my pager didn't go off... I like my system though, just need to get the sensitivity turned up some on mine since I think it's set too low :-/

On the web site, best buy mentions it also having a turbo timer? But I would assume that comes with remote start... which they won't install on a standard.

yes, viper is a very good system
just make sure you get one of the higher end ones
viper, python, clifford, and some others
are all made by directed electronics
i had a cheapo $99 viper on my car about a week ago, then i got a higher end, mile range, remote start clifford
i love it
mine also has a TT mode, but i have no turbo, so i have no use for it, even though it is hooked up
you can change the intervals of it, but you just have to do a sequence of things with your doors/brakes/valet button and it will leave the car running for however long you set it

check with your local audio stores and see if they will install it for you
i personally tell everyone never to have best buy or circuit city do your stuff
just because the people at audio stores tend to know more about audio and security

They have a good system. We have the older 690xv.

If you want the one mile range though then you need to buy the alarm/starter combo since that is the only system with that much range. You can just get the alarm portion installed though.

It's pretty good IMO. I bought the two way pager alarm system after my car got broken into. It has a mile range. I work in the third floor of my building and park in the parking garage which is about 40 yards from the building and still get signal. Plus you can adjust the sensitivity for vibrations if you park on the street and don't want it going off for people with loud systems or dumptrucks.

The only problem I have is that the battery tends to run out quick on the pager [I keep it on vibe + alert though], and the blue light that flashes when it's armed is too bright [IMO it would probably cause someone to look in when they otherwise wouldn't, and my in dash DVD isn't removable]

to some extent you may be correct. however the biggest thing is you need to get to know your installer and his/her shop before you commit to on =e or another. Personally I've been and installer for 6 or so years, with 4 or so being with a Best Buy. We here are CERTIFIED to do what we do and are INSURED fully for any accident. Our installs are also warrantied for life. Just because Jo Blow works at the "custom" shop down the street doesn't actually mean that he can install worth a rats ass. Over the years, the vast majority of work that I have had to fix has come from "custom" shops and our competitors. Are there hack installers everywhere you go? Probably. Just go in and ask questions and see what kind of a vibe you get from the shop/installer.

The best buy guy was either very well versed in BS or he knew what he was talking about. Answered all questions pertaining to install for me. If it's warranteed like said, I'll probably go with them just because it's included in the buy price.

Best buy won't install remote start though

For the money you'd be better off with a Compustar or even Scytek unit. Compustar has by far the longest range. If you get into the ssPro unit you can see up to 2 mile range. Both systems are made to work on manual tranny'd cars where the Viper would need to use their adaptor but I don't think any of the big box stores carry it.

Personal experience, I have seen more problems with Compustar over Viper.

The two way remotes with Viper don't transmit the first time sometimes, they always page you though.

Compustars will sometimes false alarm. This is sometimes cause by the driver "paging" sensor or sometimes an internal problem with the alarm itself.

Honestly range is about the same between the two as long as both are FM.

I have come across 2-3 of these issues with both systems over the past year. So it would be up to you which one you want to go with.

Hmm, lately we've had more problems with the 2way DEI systems. Range is decent but the page back is the issues. The SS units have range all over the place with the DEI units. I've had some do barely 100' where the Compustar units always do the advertised range and usually more. Hopefully soon DEI get it right because I have a lot of people that like the brand name.
