Default New Antenna

This is how I did my ‘custom’ antenna.

Start out by taking the silver trim around the radio off. Then take the radio out. If you have an antenna plugged in, unplug it now.

Now, take of the dash pad. To do this, there are 4 screws. Two in the defroster vent hole and 1 on either side of the dash. Also, take the boost gauge off. 2 Screws inside the pod and pull the wires out.

I took off the gauge surround piece to make it easier later

I used 40 feet of 18 gauge speaker wire

Separate and strip about 2 inches of one end of the wire.

Twist the 2 stripped sections together.

Now, grab the other end of the wire and fish it up to the dash. I went to the left of the heating control unit and to the right of the gauges.

Pull the wire all the way through, leaving enough coming from the radio bay to work with.

With the long portion of the wire through the top of the dash, I started laying the wire on top of everything in the dash. You can tape it down if you’d like. I did to keep it cleaner. I also put the end of the wire right where the defroster vent hole will be.

Take the striped and twisted end of the wire and place it in the antenna plug from the head unit.

I taped the wire in place so it doesn’t fall out later.

Test it out.

I placed the extra wire on top of the head unit

Reinstall the radio and dash.

Here is a picture of the end of the wire in the defroster vent hole.

Done!!

Yeah it's harder than you think to get it!

And 05FlameRed, if you could take your time and make sure it's a good write up, I would really appreciate it. Rather have you spend more time on it and it be a good how to rather than have people keep asking about it. Trying to get this section to have less stupid questions, hah.

I will definitely take my time to get it right. Good pictures to make it better will be taken tomorrow. I will try to answer all of the questions before they are asked.

Question shark antenna

hey, would this concept work for shark antenna?! obviously instead of leaving the speaker wire under the dash, you'd tuck it into the cluster of other wires going to the back and hook it up to wherever the antenna ends up being.

I gotta wonder, too...what'd you use to fill in the nice BIG hole left by removing your antenna???

im not sure if that would work. I dont know how it would hook up to the shark antenna. If your trying to avoid the dash, you could run the wire up the A pillar and lay it across the head liner. Might get an even better signal from up there. I have one station that comes in a little static. Im going to be messing with it sometime to see if I can get it clearer.

And I still have my antenna in my fender. It is just decorative now. When my car gets repainted in a few years, Ill have them shave that off.

oh well

LoL, oh well....'nother custom job!!! I wondered for a bit if those spoiler plugs would work, but the antenna hole looked a bit too big for all that - thanks, though, bud!!!

I have a plug in my antenna hole as well. if you go to the dealer there is a part number of the ACR's that had no radio as im told. but a nice "mushroom" plug should work.

Question niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiCE

niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice - I'll look into that!!! gonna be a couple of weeks before I can actually do the shark antenna.....I was thinking I might be able to put it on the trunk and not have to drill at all....LoL, just use one of the spoiler holes, but do you think that'll degrade the signal I'll get!? you usually see it on the roof.....LoL, thinking about it, that may look a LiL odd sitt'n off on the side of the trunk.... I guess that's what they made photoshop for!!!

Would it help if you ran the wire up to the roof liner like you said, and attach it to a screw so it is grounding to the body of the car?
