Default Help with a Zune install.

Ok, well im trying to do a custom Zune install with dock.

Problem - the dock has a power cable that comes attach to it already. The end of the connections is for USB.

Well i cut that end off leaving me with 4 wires
red - i know is power 5v
black - i know is ground
white
green

both white and green dont matter.

So i got some splice connections. Know i think i made a mistake by leaving the car on and forgot to turn it off. I 1st grounded the black to the cig lighter wire, and then red wire to cig lighter. I dont know if its me, but i think i smelt something. Think i burned it? or im not getting enough power?

any help cause its bugging the hell out of me. Should i of power 1st then ground or something. Does anyone know about USB and making the power supply work.

Thanks

The power outlet is 12v. You would have to have something step down the voltage to 5v. You probably fried the dock already.

Here is one made by IME. It is $250

I am sure that your cig lighter works fine because you probably fried the dock and not your cig lighter. You might be able to take a car charger for a PDA or iPod and cut the end (charger end) off and wire it to the dock wires. Then you would have to disassamble the end that plugs into the cig lighter socket and and hard wire it to the back of the cig lighter.

You might be able to pick one of these up and disassamble it and hard wire it.

It should be pretty simple. The hard part is opening it up (it might be held together with screws and that would be easy). Another option would be to get this because you could cut the part that plugs into the cig lighter off and hardwire it. Then you could just hide it and plug the usb from the dock directly into it.

Take a look at the iphone/pda charger and see if it says 5v. Amps are something else you might have to worry about. Going to sign off for the night. Check back tomorrow.
