Okay I have an 03 srt 4 and am looking to upgrade the system. First off my question is does the head unit have anything to do with the quality outside of adjustment options? It has a new jvc head unit in right now which seems to get the job done. Mainly what Im looking for is something that compliments my rock and metal tastes (think led zeppelin, mettalica, disturbed, godsmack). I dont want ridiculous bass but some would be nice, I just want an overall better sound quality like your almost at the concert lol. Money isnt really a factor but preferably reasonable options. Also keep in mind will probably have best buy install all of this because im an audio idiot and theres some shady audio stores around here (military bases sigh). Help appreciated!
the head unit is the most important piece. everything you hear originates there. i have found that late model jvc units have good sq based on the 2 i have had over the past few years. after that i would say the next most important thing would be deadening the car with something like dynamat xtreme or second skin damplifier/damp pro. this will not only quiet your car but it will dramatically improve the response of your speakers. i was really amazed at what it did for the stock system i had installed at the time.
if money is not a factor then forget bestbuy. there has to be one reputable shop in your area, and if not then i am sure you can find someone on base who has experience and would do the install for you.
to start off you need a set of 6.5" components for the front, 6x9 for the rear and maybe a single 10" sub for the trunk just to give you a little kick in the low end. as far as brand, well that is something you have to decide. stick to a well known brand and then do some research. just about every company makes good and mediocre-to-poor lines of speakers. i run a set of alpine type-x comps in the front, type-r 6x9 in the rear and a pdx 4.100 amp to drive them - but those are just my personal choices.

hmm well and what about the initial wiring they use for the headunit? I have all the receipts and everything so I can just upgrade the headunit and or switch the wiring if there is a difference. My friend said go Eclipse for head unit.

I'm personally a huge fan of Eclipse headunits. Good quality stuff with a nice bang for the buck, especially for sound quality.

Hmm do they make a set of 4 speakers for the srt-4 that will already fit? Also what about the dash ones? Il probably go with a JL W series sub, sony speakers, and an eclipse/rockford amp. Thoughts?

hmm well im on cruthfield looking for speakers. Im thinking sony but about how much can I expect to pay for the 4 speakers? I need some specific ones people know are worth their salt. im going 100w rockford amp and probably a JL W series 10 sub. But im really split on speakers and need to know what to do for the dash ones also.

That information is in the sticky:

Read around the forums and you will see some of the speakers other people have put in the SRT4. Really anything is an improvement on stock. I would NOT recommend sony though personally, as I think they are pretty cheap. Have any other options you are looking at?

Well first off when I even mention taking out my tweeters in the dash people say im an idiot and im going to mess it up. Any reason why? For speakers Im looking at polk, audiobahn, or boston acoustic.
the dash location is one of the worst places to put a set of tweeters. if you want to make your life simple then get a set of coax speakers for the front and just forget about the dash. if you want a little better sound with a little more work then get a set of components and figure out where to mount the tweet. personally i put mine in the sail panel.
of the choices you listed i would go with polk or ba.
if you have never ordered with crutchfield before then you are in a little luck. decide on what you want and then call them directly to place the order. when you do give them the following code:
p3xht-5r681-r1hix
it will get you $20 off any order of $200 or more.
try and hit up a local shop and see what they offer as far as speakers go and that way you can here how they sound, i know this isnt the best way because every set up is different but it can give you a general idea of what you may want
right now i run polk 6.5s in the door 6x9s in the back and modded my dash 2 fit a 4 inch polk. i personall like the way they sould as far as sq goes but i aslo purchased them because i got an employee discount at the time.
everything is a personal preference as far as brand i like Polk/JL subs and speakers and am a die hard pioneer HU person. and like stated before every brand has some sort of low end speaker and high end speaker.
how much are you lookin to spend for a whole set up
if you want to replace everything and want good sound you'll want
maybe a better deck if you plz
Pioneer
Alpine
Ecliplse
Kenwood
JVC- a better model if you plz
-3.5 for the dash if you plan on replacing them
-6.5 components for the door. run off an amp for best results
you can mount the tweeter in the door sail which is probably the most popular or you can opt for mounting in the pillars if you arent running or planning to run triple gauge
-6x9's for the rear
8-10" sub depending on how much trunk space your willing to sacrifice. if you find a reputable shop around there and dnt mind spending the money you can opt for a Glassed box by the wheel well
you seem to have it dwn on what you want
as for Brands
Like i said i personally like JL/Polk audio and would go with them.
You can go with
Eclipse
Boston Acoustics
Kicker
just to name a few
Just ask ?'s retail like best buy are gonna try and sell u everything and anything they can to make money i use to work at circuit city and saw it happen all the time take the time to research a few brands you like and see what fits your budget and buy
and search out sonic electronix they tend to have cheaper prices then alot of other online retailers if you plan on going that way

Lol theres so much information to process. This is what makes it hard is there is too much out and there and I dont have enough knowledge to pick what I want. Im hoping to replace the speakers and get a sub and amp for under 1500 is possible. So what does that get me lol lets just say I already have the head unit taken care of and I want polk or ba speakers, rockford amp, and a JL 10" sub. What do you have for me to work with heh.
total is around $1200 for everything you will need if ordering from crutchfield. this is assuming you reuse the stock speaker wiring. you should also pick up some form of a vibration stopping prouct like dynamat xtreme or second skin products.
keep in mind of you go this route and then take it to a local shop for installation they will rape you. they make their profit from selling, not installing, so if you do not buy from them the installation will cost more than normal. i would again suggest you find someone local who can help you AND teach you in the process.
you could always buy everything and throw it in the car and drive up to ohio. i'd be happy to install/teach you for lunch and a few beers.

Thank you very much. My only other question what parts should i get sound deadening for?
