Some idiot on city council this morning was on 1010 speaking with Bill ( forgot his last name) about how he is trying to pass a motion to have ALL SPEED LIMITS dropped by 10km in Toronto... so your average 40km becomes 30, 50 becomes 40.... you get the point!
His logic is that most people speed an additional 10km above speed limits and the cops do not ticket these infractions.
Now if only this fool tries to pass a motion that increases fines for red light infractions, rolling stop signs, failure to signal ect he'll have my blessing.
When are the cops going to do a mAJOR crackdown on city cyclists and the lack of respect for ANY street laws? The exception in this,is when I actually see a cyclist actually STOP for a stop sign or a red light, it's like they have their own laws and regulations!
Car lanes were/are designed to accommodate ONE car, with less than 3' to spare... When you factor side mirrors to this equation, especially ones that are on pickup trucks or vans that almost extend another 1' adds the additional danger of clipping a cyclist in the back of the head.
I'm surprised that no one has yet challenged the validity of this law where it is clearly pitting car against cyclists on a daily basis. Most cyclists have this added idea that it's OK to SWERVE out to miss drain grates... ... but in the eyes of the law, this is of course all legal and fine!
Thoughts guys?
I think Ontario needs more organize crime and gang violence like here in BC, then the government wont worry about drunk drivers and speeders killing people. Seems to be the way it works out here.
Here is my opinion; I have no problem if the City would drop the speed limit to 30 km/h on all residential roads and in school zones (unless it is a major road). A lot of Toronto streets are congested with parked cars, and it's harder to avoid an accident going 40 if a kid runs onto the road.
I also think most of the collector roads are fine at 50-60 km/h. However, the 400-series highways need to have their speed limit raised to 120-130 km/h. The increased speed limit would be perfectly safe and have a benefit for reducing travel time and congestion. One of my former professors at university (prominent expert in transportation engineering) had even been arguing in favor of an increased speed limit on highways.
No matter what these dumb-ass "expert" politicians say, there is only one main issue affecting safety on our roads, and it's not speed. It's fucking LANE DISCIPLINE. I really think the GTA has the worst drivers in North America, maybe only second to Florida. Why is it so hard to learn: pass on the left, drive on the right, use your signals, and for fuck's sake learn to merge properly.
So you got free insurance and most drugs are decriminalized and your worried about the speed limit? Slow down there is my advice. Oh and btw as for fl havn the Worse drivers i agree.but at the same time half those horrible drivers got a nice white and blue canadien tag and our forigeners

Does not compute...
Our speed limits are already artificially low, they don't need to be lower.
I'd like to see the limits increased by 10km/h on roads that are already 60 and up, but actually enforced. Lowering the speed limits on SOME residential streets to 40, and SOME school zones to 30 would make sense I guess.
I think the Vancouver drivers are not any better than Toronto though. People out here think a merge sign means "stop and wait for someone to let me in". Yield means "swerve into traffic and people withh just brake or swerve around me".
Don't even get me started on vehicle maintenance. I can even count on my hands and feet how many people i have almost rear ended cause all their brake lights are burnt out. I just watch for when the ass end starts to raise and then i know they are braking.
I think a law should be passed that is you get into more than one accident a year and you are at fault then you have to do mandatory driver training and re-write the drivers test. Also bring in government inspection like they have in New Brunswick where i am from. You pay about $30/year for government inspection and if the car fails then you get a nice bright orange sticker displayed on your windsheild that pretty much announces to everyone that you car is not safe for the road. You only get 14 days to fix it or it will have to be kept off the road until you fix it.

I like that law!
but again, the ontario politicans are too busy scamming the ontario tax payers w/ their 'business expenses' by buying shit at costco or 5,000 lunch meal for the staff.
See, I've come to a new understanding about cyclists.
If they happen to be riding on a crosswalk (where it is illegal to do so unless you're 12 and under) and I happen to hit them, I sure hope they happen to have the money to fix my car.
I agree with 04ebluenb; driving laws need to be more strict and certification standards need to be way higher.

Speaking of certication I think a few of us around the GVRD might do the Code Zero training. It is the same training the police do for defensive driving. I think it is like $175 and they do it by the Delta docks. Let me know if you are interested Bill.
I have lived in the GTA pretty much my whole life and have just recently moved to Montreal. I think that the GTA is actually much safer when it comes to drivers and pedestrians then here in Montreal, down here drivers do not give a s**t about anyone but them selves and are very ignorant when it comes to driving. They were showing on the news about cross walks right in front of schools and how drivers are zooming by them like its nothing. Everyone pretty much drives up everyone’s ass and speed like it’s a matter of life and death, yet the cops here do NOT give a s**t. Personally I think its stupid how people get away with these kinds of things but it’s the norm around here. I think that if any place should enforce more laws on the road it should be here so things like this don’t happen Miracle man escapes Hwy. 20 crash
This is why you should always keep your distance, but for some reason and im not saying that all drivers in Montreal are like this but a majority of them drive without a care.

Lack of police enforcement and VERY lax driving laws is what is creating this daily nightmare in Montreal,it really is the "Wild West" mentality... and police and politicians are squarely to blame for this carnage.
Been there too many times to not know this first hand, I would not dream of taking my car up to Montreal, it's always a rental, with full insurance coverage.

Gotta agree with Mario, I go there a couple of times a year.
The atmosphere is great out there, but the roads and drivers are horrible. Too many crappy roads with potholes and people double parking everywhere.
I can't imagine if they let them turn right on reds what would happen.
