They just pick a random number and charge that. UPS is the highest when it comes to brokerage fees.

USPS/Canada Post is the cheapest

Unless something has changed recently, UPS is the only courier that adds some ludicrous service fee on top of the applicable customs/taxes.

What's hilarious is I an get UPS to broker a pallet of product with hundreds of items with multiple countries of origin and tariff code for FAR less than what they charge a consumer to broker 1 product.

Use UPS at your most extreme peril. Basically only used by companies that want to be as skint as possible on their shipping overhead, no other reason to use them from a competitive or business point of view.

Over the years I have bought quite a few auto/motorcycle parts. I avoid UPS like the plague. These asshats charged me $180 duty/brokerage for a $300 USED motorcycle seat even though all North American made parts are duty free. One time I ordered a full motorcycle exhaust from California. The guy was going to ship it UPS and I asked for any other way. He offered it Fed Ex Air, cost me an extra forty but zero brokerage and duty. I always ask suppliers to ship USPS. A lot of times they will go out of the way to get your business.

It is about 25% of your purchase price....They charge the customs in which their classification on the B3 is brutal and is almost always the most tax....then you get to pay the handling fee for which there is a administration fee for which there is a services fee etc....It really is out right robbery....They do not want to handle small shipments for Joe Blow so they charge excessively and say well if you want it this bad then we will make you pay...They only want the big huge accounts that ship huge amounts but still make them big bucks...GO USPS if you can or get a US address and go pick it up your self

I used to do shipping at my old place. It was dependent on the value of the goods.

ie under $100 = $a
$101-$200 = $b
etc

We used to have these numbers from Fed Ex/UPS so we knew what to charge the customer.

When we shipped express or air there was no duty, I was just told to add $5.
So I assume duty is included with the faster services....something to look into??

FYI Richard, I had some rims/tires shipped from the US left coast via Fedex, it's cheaper than UPS according to the vendor.
$1282 usd value.
$286 usd for taxes/brokerage plus $100 usd for shipping.

I was planning on shipping to my friend and have him bring them over but last minute changes so I had to shipped them here instead. The vendor offered free shipping anywhere in the US but not Canada.

So I ended up paying an extra $386 usd for shipping it here.

I think a lot of it has to do with the sender.

When I order bicycle parts, I get them from JensonUSA.com. I place an order at 5pm, and there will be a box on my doorstep by 10am the NEXT DAY! They ship via UPS, and their warehouse is in California.

But here's what they do:
-They ship Expedited Service, which is about $25. From what I've heard, this includes any brokerage fees that may be incurred. I've placed orders ranging from $120 to over $300, with the same price for this special Expedited UPS Service.
-They also charge me the taxes on the items. This doesn't appear to be the full 8% PST and 6% GST, but something a little less. Who knows?
What I'm left with is a "to the door" price - I've never had to pay a single cent more that what I was shown. This is very impressive for getting me my stuff in less than 24 hours.

Richard, what I would do is call them, and ask them how much the duty/brokerage would be. Ask them if there's any way to get this lowered by the shipper doing something. Ask them what Expedited Service includes.
Write down the employees name/ID number that you talk to.

Then call back and ask someone else the exact same questions and see if you get the same answers. Education is key.

it really is just plain cheaper to ship to buffalo and go pick them up! I know it's a pain sometimes, but I've been doing it for couple of years now and 70% of the time when I delcare what I picked up the baorder guard lets me go....no tax no nothing!

give it a shot man.
