Default what to look for when logging knock and spark

ok,

What should one look for when logging knock & spark?

I've read which things to log, but what should I be looking for?

Can you have LT of zero, ST of zero and a TOT of 14?

I'm under the impression spark = timing?

So that would mean higher is better until it causes knock.

We usually don't moniter Total. Just the Long term and short term. LT-ST. ST is knock happening right at that moment while LT is the Knock the PCM takes out no matter what after it has seen so much. If you get LT its best to reset the computer to get rid of it

Well good. That would mean, my car is looking good as far as knock is concerned. Car is on the 93 tune and it shows, I have some wiggle room concerning tuning.

Thanks kason.

When logging knock I log short term, long term and total knock retard. You don't have to log total if you don't want to...

I'm pretty sure you were actually logging max knock retard instead of total knock retard hence the reason you were seeing the "14". This is the maximum knock retard the PCM can pull at any given time.

As far as logging spark, if you want to know what your actual spark is you need to log the "actual spark" PID from either cylinder 1, 2, 3, or 4. And yes, spark is timing.

Thanks kason.

I personally, do monitor ignition advance on cyl 1,.. just to get a good indication of what the timing curve actually looks like.

I forget what the actual parameter is called.. I could look it up if you'd like. But, I do that more or less to keep an eye on total advance. (Nick is right, I just re-read his post, its actual spark)

Which, isn't as important to know as knock retard.. but, it can still offer up some interesting information.

A lot of people seem to enjoy logging boost,.. while that's all fine and dandy, that's not exactly on the top of my list of things to watch. Considering that my boost never changes. That, and if I feel the need to get a number,.. I can use my scangauge to check it real quick. Its a lot nicer than doing a log,.. stopping the recording.. then playing it back to see what the computer is actually seeing.

I'm not knocking (no pun intended lol) the predators logging abilities, they have proven very useful with my E85 venture.

I won't say what my setting are for e85, simply because I don't want to be responsible for someone without enough fuel,.. blowing their shit up because of it. But, I will say.. I have been able to get pretty aggressive with the timing.

I had it out in the cool air for the first time the other night with E in the tank,.. and .. lets say I was pretty impressed.

I'm going to start lowering the mix .. so, I don't need anymore of it than required to keep the timing in it,.. but.. my timing curve is pretty damn aggressive right now.. so, who knows. I need to get some time in with the cooler temps. My tune is based around a 90 degree day, with high humidity. We'll see how things go once the temps start to drop.

Sorry, I'm rambling again.. I'll shutup now.

If you have any questions, feel free to fire me a message man, I'll try to help where I can.

-Will.
