Default Best WGA for the DSP

I have asked in a couple of threads about this, but I was told to start my own. I read tha the FM WGA is the best one to use with the DSP and PCM controlled boost. I am wondering why? If we are using PCM controlled boost, what is wrong with putting the stock WGA back in and letting the PCM use that since that is what it was made for?

All aftermarkets WGA have "Stiff" springs to "hold more boost" yada, yada, yada, BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER, right,,but is it BETTER??? Anything must be better than stock right? I'm not so sure. Most are used off PCM boost and usually just cause crazy PTB. Redline boost is almost always 15 psi or so regardless. The adjustable rod is nice but is it really needed if you have the proper control.

So if we now have CONTROL on how boost is applied and when, I'm not so sure the same rules apply anymore. Maybe some EBC guys can chime in this?

The stock WG should work much better with the stock and S1 WGA duty cycle tables that already exist.

I will not say anyone needs to use one WGA over the other, but this needs to have more investigation.

I have the new style AGP with a stiffer spring, so I think I am going to have crazy spikes using it. I also have the stocker still, so I may just throw it on there and see how it does. I need to wait for new solenoids though, I broke a nipple off of #2.

Same here, APG++(2nd spring installed + bigger blead). Off PCM, I spike at 19-20psi. On PCM, at the same wg setting its 30psi+. I readjusted the rod to get 0 preload but I haven't tested yet because of the bad weather here.

I have a stock wga I bought to use to design an pneumatic actuator for my Mccord Power plate. I think I might swap it on just to see what its like.

stock wga installed here. after logging quite a bit...it's making 18psi until about 5000, dropping to 15-16psi between there and 6000, and above 6, drops to 12-13psi. Great for the stock 4psi WGA.

^^Yep, I just double checked one of my old logs:

Off pcm boost =
17.8psi spike at 4000 but at 6000RPM its only 14.9 psi.

I stopped at 6Krpm but don't doubt it would have dropped off more. looks about the same to me

I'm thinking the stiffer springs are just sloppy band-aids to make up for the lack of proper control.

That's good. plus using the stocker will give 0 PTB, so it will be like the good ole days of pre-mods.

I liked my stock WGA with the diablo. It also spiked about 18ish and then fell to 15-14 by redline. I just got the FM WGA for x mas though, and its a very nice WGA. I dont have the PTB issues like other people, and I really enjoy it. I hooked it up the first day and the car yanked like hell! It spiked 19 and then fell to 17 and held for a little. It then fell to about 16 by redline.. It was very nice! My A/Fs were also good on those pulls, 11.8 all the way till redline. I didnt touch anything and the second day the boost fell, I would spike 17ish and then it would hold 15. I was like WTF!?!?! I boost leak tested the car yesterday and found a good one on the intercooler pipe and tightend the Tbolt until it didnt leak anymore. I havent had a chance to run the car since, but I hope it will be like the first day!!

Hopefully this helps a bit. I have had 3 different WGA's on the car...all on PCM controlled boost.

1. Stock was stock. Spike 14-15, hold 13 or so and about 11 at redline.
2. Got the S2 kit. S2 WGA was on the S2 PCM. Spiked 18 or so and slowly crept down to 15-16 at redline, never really holding a consistent amount.

I talked to a guy on here that had his S2 kit still on PCM control and said that it was a more aggressive tune than most gave it credit for so he put a FM WGA to see what would happen. I did the same about 3 months ago.

3. FM WGA spike 20-21 psi holding 19-20 strong until dropping off to around 16 psi at redline. All still on the S2 PCM. No extra tuning, only reset the PCM after the install.

When some of these guys talk about using the stock wga with the diablosport, I just can't imagine them being able to hold the boost that the FM held. Even with the badass tune. Hell, even the S2 WGA wasn't holding boost well. I feel like no one really knew that a better WGA while leaving it on PCM control would yield such great results with the S2 PCM, but a lot of people wanted to take the cheap route and go s1 PCM, aftermarket WGA...and PART THROTTLE BOOST GALORE!!!

I'm sure the Diablosport yields even better results than the S2 PCM because it seems to really take full advantage of all timing, air/fuel, etc. whereas the S2 is relatively conservative.

So to answer the question, based on my experience with different WGA's on PCM control, I can only imagine that a better WGA on PCM control with the Diablosport will yield much better results than with the stock WGA. The springs in the stocker or the s2 wga did not seem strong enough to hold that kind of boost. Again, just my experience.

I can get rid of the PTB with a custom tune...

That's awesome and this is why the Predator seems badass to me. But what the OP, and myself, are wondering is can the stock wga with your custom tune hold just as much boost at WOT as an aftermarket wga (FM, AGP, etc.) with the same tune?

Everything I've heard about these tunes make me want to get one more and more each day. Sounds like it will fully max out the stock turbo with my S2 components.

I've honestly had better luck with aftermarkets as far as holding boost goes... Standard rules apply... Spring X2 is what you can achieve normally. The setup on the stock SRT4 is a little weird in the way it functions that's why you can go so much higher with it... although it won't hold it. At least not that I've seen... Big turbo guys know the drill about wastegate springs... If you want consistency its better to have a spring that will hold at least 50% of your target.

So will an AGP with a stiffer spring be ok, or should I invest in the FM?

Thanks for the info. The only downfall now is I can pay $400 -500 for the unit and tune but a new clutch to handle ~300 whp 350 wtq will be close to $700 with install. Then I start thinking to myself, is it really worth spending over $1K for an additional 20whp and 30-40 wtq. Might have to consider a different turbo while I'm at it
