You might also want to add that modifing the stock exhaust can very well be illegal. Alot of people think that because the car comes with no mufflers that it is OK to change the exhaust with larger pipes (louder) and not need any mufflers. That is incorrect. Just because it doesn't come with any mufflers, dosen't mean you wont need them when moding...

The stock exhaust is barely legal, change it in a way that makes it louder and it is more than likely illegal, mufflers or not. This includes the Mopar exhuast.

Check your local state laws, some don't allow exhaust mods of any sorts, even if its quieter.

Oh well we know it's illegal but the cops can be fooled. I've many times said to a cop, well, if I add a muffler, wouldn't that be modifying the stock exhaust and thereby be breaking the law? And it worked! I know my exhaust is illegal as it stands but the cops don't really know that it has an illegal aftermarket exhaust and the information about it coming from the factory with no mufflers can get you out of a ticket.

You and I know that (cause we're old I think ), but some folks do not, I've seen posts of people that are really pissed they got pulled over for loud exhaust and couldn't understand why they need a muffler, LOL...

That's a good thing to keep in the glove compartment. I keep a copy in mine. Fortunately, I've never had to use it.

In case anyone in NH wants to know the laws, here's a site I found with lots of information:

http://www.francestown.us/

I doubt the person who put this together would appreciate their hard work being used to help people with loud cars duck the rules, but that's the risk you run when you post something on the 'Net!

In response to post 5, I have to wonder what experience was so tramatizing that this person fealt the need to write such an extensive...essay(for lack of the correct term).

I think that guy needs some psychological help. Hearing a loud exhuast for a couple of seconds shouldn't incite such unbridled hate. I also don't like the way he uses percentages to manipulate the statistics. Percentages tend to make any situation look a lot worse. If I said there was a 9 trillion% increase in sound levels of a car, that sounds pretty dang loud. If I told you that car originally emitted noise level of about 1x10 -9million(superscript, I dont know how to do it here), well it's probably still pretty damn quiet. This guy and other people like him have a bone to pick for some reason and they feel like forcing their perceptions of acceptability on others. He should move to California if he wants to be a hot rod Nazi. oh yes and

Of course, this discussion has to change now that the new exhaust law has been put in place. There is really no question about it now, the police are pretty clear what the law is now, unlike in the past. If you modify the exhaust to make it louder, you are going to get a ticket. Even if you have the stock exhaust, you may have to prove it in court, and you might have to install a muffler to get out of the 2 point moving violation on your driving record. Like Gabeg said, hot rod Nazis have struck Massachusetts. I get so pissed every time a god damned motorcycle passes by and nearly breaks my ear drums, yet I can't have a rumble coming from my tail pipe. How many trucks and V8s have driven by with louder than stock exhausts? How come the cops aren't pulling them over? I guess if you have a sport compact you aren't allowed to have a little fun. That's the problem I have with the new Nazi exhaust law.

Jean, you think thats bad try living in california. Lucky me im about the only guy that has not yet got popped, thank god. And my exhaust is LOUD. I have cruised side by side with CHP and such on the freeway and on the streets and they dont even bat an eye at me. Maybe im just one lucky bastard or god truly does love me.

Exhaust is 3" turboback with 4" tips and 1 resonator, no cat.

they will give u a ticket if u have a after market exhaust. but doesn't meineke use after market mufflers on there car repairs. so shouldn't regular people who have a meineke exhaust get tickets too.

the law is not to change it unless neccessary, like a hole or clogged cat or something, but im not sure if u have to go back to oem type parts, either way ud probably have to fight that in court as well

I just got pulled over a few weeks back, cop said he did not like "the popping noises" coming from my exhaust. I tried to explain that was how they were designed and sold with no muffler, he flipped out and pretty much said I was an idiot. Also said if he saw my POS car on the streets again without a muffler he would have it impounded. Driven by that pig station over a thousand times in the last 4 years of having that exhaust, never been stopped for any reason.

Removed the S2 and put a resonator on it, hate the way it sounds now. Still SE though.......

Seems it is the towns that are getting serious about certain "noise violations", doesn't matter the time of day or any of that. Think I am going to have to get a Needswings unit, full exhaust off Ebay and put on a Camaro muffler, just leave it open 2/3 the time........
