Default 3rd Gear Gone

A little background into what happened. The following occurred in about 3 seconds:

I was following a 18 wheeler through a construction zone on 495, near 290 last night. As two lanes cut down to one, the driver of the 18 wheeler wasn't paying attension and hit a bunch of cones, sending two over my car. Well he jerked to the left, leaving me with a straight line towards a state trooper, so i slam on the brakes and swerve to the left also. As I do this there is another 18 wheeler now on my ass, so a go to shift into 3rd gear, but it won't go, so i throw it into 2nd (hitting the rev limiter), then slam into 3rd (with enough force to pop the shift knob off) avoiding getting crushed.

Now 3rd gear will not go in with RPM's above 2K, and makes a very bad grinding sound if I even try.

Can this possibly be fixed w/o dropping the tranny? ie//: pedal adjustment or shift linkage? Or am I F'd in the A?

Sounds like 3rd gear is cooked....I havent worked on an srt tranny yet but I've done plenty of hondas and based on those symptoms, Im 90% sure that transmission is gonna have to be disassembled.

From what I have searched, it seems we can remove a cover from our tranny, and pull the gears out.? This is mentioned during synchro replacement.

further searching confirmed this. There is a How To in the drive train section.

I'd check the shift fork and shift selector first
pretty sure you can remove the cover without moving anything but the battery and whatever else is in the way
you can do the selector outside the tranny
knock on wood
Cuz you gotta go inside the tranny to do the fork
otherwise I'd guess 3/4 synchro before the gear itself busted

I'm thinking its either the shift selector or the 3/4 synchro. Because everything else is shifting perfectly, except for 3rd. I can feel the teeth as I apply pressure on the shifter towards 3rd. So I will take a look at the shift selector thru the little peep hole. If that doesn't provide any help, I'm thinking about removing the gears and bring them in to a shop to ave some $$$.

dang, nice save. rev limiter in second is ~60... when dyno'ing you only need 4th anyway.

As you can imagine, there was a little tire spinning involved at that point.

Any gear? Everything else works except for 3rd. Although it did slip in this morning... very weird. (Forgot to skip it.)

I had this problem with the clip. But it wouldn't be gear specific, it would be with ALL the gears. So that's not the problem.

I agree with MASSSRT to check shift selectors. If that's not the problem, it's probably the synchro. If it was the gear, you'd have no third at ALL. Good luck, man.
