Default Social Security

Has anyone in here withdrawn from it? I'm seriously debating it and I'm just wondering what your guys' opinions are on it.

It's a completely voluntary program. You turn in your social security card and number. You are given a document stating that you don't have a social security number etc etc. You don't put any money in but you can't benefit from it. I'm still relatively young so if I do it then it would be best if I did it now. I really don't like the idea of putting all of this money in with the possibility of it not being there when I go to retire. Secondly, I don't like the idea of the government managing my retirement

I'd be surprised if they'd allow that to happen. To many would opt out and the system would fail quicker. Funny though, people would opt out of SS, but are all for socialized medicine. I thought the gov't did everything better, but here they are saying, they want out....I can sum that up in one word....

HYPOCRITICAL!

I would opt out in a second if i could get my money back, I figure all my money will be gone by the time I retire anyways the way the Gov. is handing it out to the rich people (big business)

How are they handing it out to rich people? Most of the tax money used in social programs goes to the poor and criminal immigrants. If you earn/have over a set amount you can't even collect SS, even though you paid in all those years.

Instead of handing our money correctly and investing it the government has spent it as it was ordinary tax revenue. There is no Trust fund, just IOUs and we on SS are suppose to feel guilty about drawing it.
If I could have invested all that money I put in it I would have been a millionaire by now.

There should be no discussion at all here.

I could have sworn there was a way to opt out of the social security program. My mom worked for them so I think she was the one that talked about it. Either her or a teacher I had in high school. I will have to do some more research.

I think it may be when you are in business for yourself.
