Default What's living in Detroit like???

Might have to move there and was currious what it's like there.
Haven't heard anything good to be honest... So I figured I'd ask in a forum with ppl of similar interests.

- Do you have inspection / emission stuff?
- Front plates?
- What's the legal racing like? Lot's of AutoX and so on?
- What's the not so legal racing like? Lots of ppl on the street?
- What about living in the country side? Can one buy land for cheap?
- Gunlaws... is having fun legal?

Yeah, might be the wrong forum for some of those, but I figured I'd give it a shot.

No inspections or emission tests.

No front plates.

There are plenty of AutoX events, and several road courses throughout the state.

Not so legal racing can be found easily on Woodward and Gratiot, as well as other areas. If you don't know these road names, you will soon in the Detroit area.

Not so sure about land, depends on the exact area you are talking about. Home prices have dropped well over 50% depending on area.

I have my CPL, carry daily, and I am an avid gun right supporter, shooter, etc. What exact questions do you have about ownership?

Can I own guns being here on a work visa?

The area would be 30 minute radius around Troy. So north basically.
I'm a country boy and if I can't have 10 acres I'm gonna go nuts.

I am pretty sure that you cannot own handguns. Shotguns and rifles are different.

I work in Troy, and live 20 miles from work. It can take me up to an hour to get home during rush hour, normally a half hour with lighter traffic.

I don't even want to imagine what 10 acres would cost that close to Troy.

Ok, what do 10 acres go for near you then?
If I have to commute further that's fine, i just couldn't leave in or near the city...

Rifles and shot would be fine. You think that's legal?
Also, are semi auto ar15s considered rifles there?

I am pretty sure they are considered rifles. Check out MCRGO - Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners

You're looking anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000 an acre in the metropolitan area, if you can even find it.

Out further, prices will drop down but you will have an hour plus commute with light traffic.

OMG... that sucks.
Looking at the map I already knew it's horrible, but I didn't know it was that bad...

The car scene is maybe the best in the nation. Summer time in Michigan is great, plenty of car events and shows. You'll love Woodward, maybe 5-10 minutes from Troy. Plenty to look at. Winters, economy, job security and trying to get out all sucks right now.

Yea, that about sums it up.

Don't forget shitty torn up roads, and you always know it is spring. The orange barrels are in bloom.

Barrels? Sorry, didn't get that one.
Construction maybe?

So to sum up:
-Car stuff: AWESOME
-Terrain of the state: sucks
-Living in the country: possible, but huge commute
-Guns: better than NY
-Job / economy / jadajada: I'm an automotive engineer... do I have a choice?

Yes construction here sucks. Even with the construction the roads still suck. To move out into the country you'll have to travel about 45 mintues from troy. It most likely wont be 10 acres like you want be you can find some north west of troy.

In the Detroit area it's pretty flat as far as terrain. There are a lot of lakes, and some really gorgeous areas.

The northwest side of the state has sand dunes, hills, cliffs, and some of the most gorgeous landscape I've ever seen in the Midwest.

I do not doubt that at all, I just love mountains... well, I don't give a crap about mountains actually, but the roads on them are wicked

So I grew up in the alps, moved to central NY and as it seems I'm heading to MI next...
Can't get any flatter from here I don't think

What about my wife?
Any thing I could have her looking forward too? Lots of state parks maybe? Or big shopping malls?

Oh, winter... is it as bad as in CNY? Worse? I doubt that's even possible...

That's along the lines of what I usually hear, but I would appreciate a bit more useful information...
