Take those individually as just neat stuff that's coming out...
What I want to ask is what you guys think of touch screens being integrated into gaming. Would you guys want a touch screen pad to replace a mouse? Not in the aspect of the screen you're viewing to be touch screen because that would obviously just get in the way (for an FPS game), but a pad that emulates a mouse, similar to a laptop touch pad.
The Stantum Pmatrix allows for multi-touch... which has a lot of really great aspects, combine that with a large touch screen and you have pretty much the technology displayed in Minority Report.
What if they developed a pad that had integrated directional movement (8 way+)... tap, double tap, pinch, 1-2 tap, pretty much any feature any current mouse has, plus the ability to add hotkeys. Would you guys be interested in using something like that or do you feel its a long way off before the mouse is replaced for a PC gamer?
Responsiveness and the ability to differentiate between taps and # of fingers etc would really make or break the use, but the price to obtain that would be key.
What would you like to see done with touch screen/mirror technology?
I could never see myself using any type of touchscreen for gaming. Tactile feedback plays a HUGE rule in the minutae of character/precision control, at least it does for me. If you don't get any feedback from what your hands are doing, you're a lot more likely to lose your orientation more often.
Remember, most true gamers don't look at their controls when they are using them. They navigate by feel, and thats one of the reasons individual keys on a keyboard stand out.
Now if you are using touchscreen to interact with what you are viewing, you are much less likely to lose orientation. But that's not very practical in gaming.

I understand what you're saying... but I'm going to assume you didn't look at the links I posted? It sounds like what you're saying is you're looking for a physical response, like when you press a key on a keyboard, you can feel and hear it... same with a mouse. The Stantum Pmatrix does offer visual feedback. A physical feedback would be much more difficult to obtain for a touch device, but I don't think its far out of the question.
Add textural notches at the top, bottom, left, right and 4 way diagonal as well as one in the center. Throw in the visual feedback and fine tuned software and I think it would have potential. It would be like combining a mouse and the directional keys' function all in one.
the only real gaming i could see working with a touchscreen would be strategy games...
but then again... Zelda on the DS was 100% touch screen and IMO it was one of the best zelda games ever made.. so who knows
That game is really enjoyable... I haven't picked it up in a few weeks. I've pretty much been on the PS3 and my GF hardly puts the DS down anymore.
I was solely using FPS games as my basis for this... with the right software, you could really get a pretty nice advantage, hotkey everything from fire, movement, strafe, reload, weapon switch, etc. What is really key to all this is the multi-touch and visual feedback.
You could easily pull a 180 with a quick swipe of your finger on the side, scope in by pinching etc... you could even add a multi-function row of keys along the side, doing everything with 1 hand that you do with 2. I know this idea isn't flawless and its not even real... but I like coming up with ideas and trying to work out all the bugs, I just never actually do anything with it.
For now I guess just stick with your standard mouse and keyboard. But it should be interesting to see how this technology evolves. The one about the mirror is pretty sweet, I'm sure you've seen the game you can play in the car, using the outside as your game background and playing on the car windows as the screen.
I really want to like the idea of touchscreen controls if not for easier cleaning, then for the future-y appeal, but I would never rely on it.
Considering the way I treat some of my peripherals from time to time, coupled with how many times I've shattered my touchscreen cell phone from pressing too hard, I would never invest in the technology.
