PS3 sales increase by 999% in the UK and outsells the Xbox 360 3-1
Chart-Track has told GamesIndustry.biz that sales of the PlayStation 3 have rocketed 999 per cent over the past week.
Quote:
Sony introduced the new, slimmer SKU last Tuesday, and although Chart-Track does not reveal actual sales numbers, Dorian Bloch, director of the firm called the growth "a huge increase".
"The uplift on week 36 on week 35 is plus 999 per cent," revealed Bloch. "We don't give out the hardware numbers, but never-the-less it's a very large increase."
ChartTrack has told MCV that it is not releasing specific sales numbers, but did say:
Quote:
“The sales increase is very impressive, making the PS3 the top selling hardware in Week 36. The Xbox 360, Wii and DS Lite all sold around the same amount last week – PS3 Slim outsold each of them by a ratio of three-to-one.”
The sales-tracking firm added that it’s unsure how long the uplift will continue for.
“The longevity of this uplift very much depends on the time of year. The PS2 Slim was released in November, much closer to Christmas. We’ll have to wait and see how things work out for Sony this time.”
Xbox 360 Week 3: 13.7k
Xbox 360 Week 2: 10.6k (Elite price cut)
Xbox 360 Week 1: 7.4k

Sony UK's sales director Mark Howsen has told GamesIndustry.biz that first week sales of the PlayStation slim have exceeded expectations.
The new unit went on sale last Tuesday in the region priced at GBP 249, with Chart-Track data revealing today that sales were up over 1000 per cent.
"The first week's Chart-Track numbers for sales of the new PlayStation 3 were ahead of our expectations, so we were extremely pleased," offered Howsen.
"A new price point and a new machine has proven a significant catalyst to help consumers make the move onto PS3."
The wife bought a PS3 slim. She said my 20gb wouldn't read discs anymore, she didn't know why. I am pretty sure she left it out for my 19 month old to knock over a few times, but I can't prove it.
Just as well, I wasn't looking forward to mounting exhaust fans on the back of my entertainment stand since the PS3 was putting off a lot of heat in the enclosed space. Hopefully the Slim does better with heat and being enclosed.
Damn man, I thought this thread was going to be facetious.........you weren't lying, lol.

Its like a car, when you dont start it up for a long time, it will be dead
Thats good news for Sony. It's expected for the sales to spike like that with the release of the newly designed console. Now it needs to hold that number 1 spot. Still lacks games though.
pretty much only US sales count because it's by far the largest game market
Yeah, but I was in before you said this, lulz.
It's the largest game market because we are a country of consumers who love gadgets. Plus we have the biggest number of lazy fuckers who like to plop in front of large displays and play video games. God Bless America!

No, she used the shit out of it actually. I got rid of our DVD player, so it pulled triple duty as a DVD, BR and game system. She got all hissy with me when I said not to send it in to Sony until I got home....."how am I supposed to watch movies?" she says. Oh gee, I don't know, try using the damn DVD player in the bedroom or go buy a shitty 20 dollar one from Walgreens.

this is an expected and temporary reaction to the price drop.
Well that and the release of the Slim. But you should be happy. More consoles sold means more demand for games, which means more competition and maybe one day we can stop hearing about how you blame Sony for MS ripping you off for shit.
i AM happy. one step closer to cheaper 360 hard drives, free Live accounts, and getting towards a reason to buy a PS3 for the games that i do want to play but can't justify buying it solely for.

dont fool yourselves.. Microsoft makes PLENTY on ads to give Live away for free. in fact its been free for PC gamers for over a year, due to competition by Steam.
Even if MS took a small hit on it, I'm sure they would see it as an investment in pulling a few more heads away from Sony.
