Default PS3 owners......Blu Ray sound problem

i have my PS3 sound going from the optical output to my Sony STR-DE895 receiver. anyway, when i put in a regular DVD, the sound works fine, 5.1 DTS or Dolby....whatever (the purple light comes on). when i play a Blu Ray, it automatically goes to 2.1 sound. i am running it HDMI to the TV and optical to the surround sound, my receiver has no HDMI. anyways........any thoughts? any ideas? i also set my PS3 sound settings to every available option.

i will probably just buy another receiver, but damn.......i love mine!

I saw this on another forum:

Two key factors in the PS3 audio settings. if you are going to be running optical cable from PS3 to your receiver, make sure you select "bitstream" under "BD/DVD audio output format(optical)" .. if you are going to run HDMI from PS3 to your receiver, make sure to select "Linear PCM" under "BD/DVD audio output format(HDMI)" ..

probably another reason why it's not a good idea to use a game system as a movie player

by the way.. wrong section.

wrong section? i don't see how. granted i am not asking about a game in particular, it's a question in regards to a game system. where, might i ask, do you think my question would get more exposure to people who own the system? oh yeah, that's right, the gaming section.........duh.

by the way, Eagles picked up Asante Samuel! SWEET! if only they could get Moss too.

Belongs here. So let it be written.

Anyway, yep, its all bout matching your audio selection to your cabling method.

I was typing what 91ZX11 posted, then for some reason I scrolled up... Man I hate knowing all this stuff by heart. Honestly, If I could wipe all my Home Theater Knowledge out of my head I would in a Second.

I don't know the stuff like MoxhairR/T does, but I have friends in the audio/visual field. I know where to find info, equipment and accessories that I otherwise wouldn't know about it. They helped me set up a badass theater system.

If you wipeout all your knowledge please save it to a hard drive or DVD's so I can have it. That's some valuable info.
