Getting a laptop for graduation, any recommendations?
Just graduated college and the rents are giving me around $1000 bucks for a laptop. I'm not looking for some hardcore Alienware gaming laptop but something that i can have fun with most games without breaking the bank. I've been configuring the dells of course and i'm kind of bored of their laptops (my fiancee and my mom have the inspirons). I was looking at the HP Pavilions w/ the Turion processors and the Core 2 Duo processors and really like the HP products. Any likes or dislikes on HP's laptop market? i have one configured right now that sits around $1200 +/-.

I wouldn't do the HP. Friend of mine "has" one. I say "has" because it is currently at one of HPs repair centers for the forth time in the last two months. Seems to be having issues with the ram cooking itself and the screen not wanting to work all the time. And it does have the AMD processor you want. I have read some reviews online, and this seems to be a common problem. Thats why i recently purchased a Dell laptop. Inspiron 1720 with a 2Ghz Core2 Duo, 3gb ram, 230gb HDD,17 inch widescreen, Wi-Fi, and a 256mb GeForce 8600m GT graphics card. Took about 4 days to get it, and the total was $1,250. I would suggest looking at Dell again, unless you really dont like them.

thanks for the input. I have nothing against Dell, was just looking at other options. Guess since everyone has dells that must mean they either have great marketing or great products. I'll check em out again, thanks.
I've heard of the AMD's running hotter than the Core 2 Duo's, which was one of my concerns.
I bought a Dell Latitude D620 through school and I have had one problem with it, but they shipped me a brand new battery no questions asked (this actually benefitted me, as the battery was about a month away from going out of warranty). My battery had abeen a problem from teh get-go when compared to other classmates batteries, so i was really happy that they replaced it. IMHO the AMD processors that I have dealt with are paperweights...I would never buy another AMD-equipped computer from any manufacturer again.

Yeah, i have had a couple AMDs before, but they were all desktop CPUs. They all seemed to run very good, even when they were overclocked. But from what i am seeing with their laptop processors is that, yeah, they do tend to run a little hot. Every issue i see with any laptop with an AMD is caused by excessive heat. Plus, Intel has always had a better mobile processor anyways.
I'll second this. My friend just bought one from Buy.com. It's a beautiful piece, came with a nice case and a little wired mouse. It's a pretty nice package and came in at about $1050.00 shipped, I think.
My wife just got a HP tablet PC. It's bad ass. She flips the screen down and takes notes on it in class and it translates it into typed letters. As far as HP quality issues...I had one for years that got banged around and full of dirt riding around in HumVees when I was in the Army. I used it about 4 years and then gave it to my dad. He still has it and it's probably 8 years old now. Still works. Been through a couple power cords but that's probably my fault.
gaming and laptop don't go hand in hand. not for 1000, at least.
i'd recommend getting a desktop if games are a priority
and the guy who said apple is an idiot, unless you want to play 3 year old games. and i think the lowest macbook you can get is already over your budget anyway.

Yeah gaming is not high priority for the laptop, it'd just be nice to be able to play certain games within performance-reason. Most of the laptops i've been configuring via dell-hp-sony have been upwards to about 1500 so my $1000 budget is busted already. But even so, my main goal is just to have a nice fast moving laptop. What i've been configuring is a 2.2-2.4ghz pentium with 3gigs ram 256mb vid card 200gig 7200rpm HDD, 15.4" screen, and the 32-bit Vista home premium.
And hopefully Vista is becoming more trustworthy because i cant get away from it except through dell, who still offer XP laptops.
Thanks for the input guys. Oh and my gaming desire was greatly reduced last night when my fiancee went half in with me for my graduation and we got an xbox 360 elite. Gears of war and Dead rising here i come.

you're doing it wrong! go for a Core2Duo . much better than a pentium.
MacBook FTMFW... havent you seen the commercials? Mac>PC... there is absolutly nothing you cant do on a mac that you can do on a PC... well besides get virus
I have the basic MacBook and I have both Leopard and Win XP loaded onto it
(Leopard comes with a program called BootCamp that allows you to do both!) and its funny because if you do some digging around the internet... you will find out that the MacBook has been named the "Fastest Windows XP running Laptop computer available on the market"
