Default Question on VPNs and Routers! plz hlp me!

Alright, so here is the situation I am in...

I am using TivoToGo w/ My Series 2 Tivo. In a nutshell, you can install the Tivo client on a computer that is on your home network, access your Tivo, and transfer shows from the Tivo to PC and watch them whenever, whether you are still connected to the network or not.

Now my question is this. I want to be able to access my home network from anywhere - parents house, brothers house, work, etc. Will a router with VPN allow me to do this? If so, is it a fairly simple thing to set-up? If not, what would be my best option? Thanks!

It would but I would think you'd also need a VPN client for your machine. I've done some support on VPNs but honestly I'm not sure exactly how to set them up.

Does your home computer have XP Pro or XP Media Center?

Yeah best bet is to port forward your router and remote desktop into a machine in the network. otherwise you will need to setup a VPN server and the VPN configuration on the router.

I can help you out with all this, its what I do all day long
So hit me up on aim "iamxero"

As for the tivo to go. Do they have an external website you login to to get to your media? or aer you supposed to connect directly to your client at home?

Im familiar with other apps like this, Orb, Tversity, etc that work similarly....just hit me up

Vista Ultimate. Has all the same features as Media Center.

TivoToGo uses a client on a computer actually connected to your network. There is no way to access the media over their website.

I don't think remote desktop is my best option. I want to be able to get the files from my network onto the remote computer that I am using. What is the best way to do that? Smoger suggested setting up an ftp server, which I may try.

I RDP into my home computer, or Radmin.

I run an FTP server and an HTTP server, so if I need something, I can leave it on the FTP or hop on RDP, move it to my FTP shared directory and then download it there.

As for the client, I am assuming the Tivotogo is running an HTTP listener, so you would just need to portforward your router to your box.

You can go to www.dyndns.org so you can get a free domain name so you dont have to worry about your IP changing.

I no longer use IP to connect, i use myname.kicks-ass.net

Not sure about Vista Ultimate, but the reason I asked about XP Pro or MC is you can set up Remote Desktop, I'll bet anything Vista Ultimate has it. For that, you just have to forward port 3389 to your computer's IP address. I don't know what format the TivoToGo files are, but they may work with Orb. Orb is super easy, and it lets you get all your music, pics, videos and documents from any internet connected device. I stream music and vids to my Treo 700 using Orb, also works on my RAZR.

there is a website www.orb.com

It installs a client and then connects to the orb website. You can connect to the orb website from anywhere, PDA, Cell, etc

Orb will adjust the stream to work with whatever device your on. If your using a tv tuner card you can even watch your cable tv from your cell phone. Very cool. Also access all media saved on your puter

Believe it or not, that actually did not mean a whole lot to me. I do hardware and software, not networking

I'll try orb.com and see how that works.

You don't need vpn to do this if oyu're looking to do just one computer

You can use rdc which is free and built in already.
port formward 3389 on your router to the computer that you want to access
Set up remote management in the router and you're done

If you want more than one computer you have lots of solutions but the one i'd recommend is buy a dlink vpn router only because it's easier to set up verses linksys. Configure it and install clients on your machines and voila.

So I get the IP from my computer, and port forward 3389 to that IP address? That will allow me access to my network or to the computer? Any why port 3389 (just curious)?

3389 is the rdp port

I work software, hardware, and a heavy networking background. Just trying to offer to help you get a solution

EDIT

You also need to have remote desktop setup on your computer.

If you *do* want to do VPN, I recommend the open-source firmware DD-WRT on a Linksys or other supported router. You don't have to have the VPN version of the router, as it's all done in the firmware anyway.

I tried for literally years to get the built-in Windows VPN server working through my Linksys WRT54G v2, but I could never get it to work right. I installed DD-WRT on the router and used it's built-in VPN server, and everything's been perfect.
