What kind of bike do you want? Cruiser? Crotch rocket? I love mine and I just put the forward controls on it. 2006 suzuki M50. I am 6ft and 230lbs and the bike is great. 805cc.

You could find a good condition used 600cc anywhere, it would be a good starter bike for ya. Don't be psycho and go buy an R1 just to lay it down a week later. Start with a used bike that has good replacement parts if you want, you're gonna be learning so dropping the bike is part of the learning process.

Have you taken any classes before going for your license yet? take some classes and talk to some experienced riders, get advice on where to start and what ever else you need to invest in. Also check on your insurance estimate, sometimes the type/displacement of the bike can make a big difference on how much you pay.

x2 to what nate said, its always good to take a MSF course before hoping on a bike....

its not the CC's that kill you though, Its the rider...

I learned how to ride on a Liter bike, then bought my 600rr, I could have got a Liter bike as my first bike but I decided I wanted a 600 because it was more nimble through the twisties... Just ride safe and obey the laws and remember everything you had learned in the MSF (if you take one) and you'll be just fine.

r6, cbr 600 or a gsxr 750 are good starter bikes, for as tall as you are i would think the 750 would be alittle more comfortable..

work on your peripheral vision some too, you'd be surprised how well it comes into play with other drivers out there. Learn to read other drivers around you, they can be unpredictable but if you catch onto thier habits will riding along side/front/behind you can atleast anticipate your reaction.

SRT was also right, it's not the bike but the rider that can get himself injured or killed. It's all fun and games when you catch onto the fun but don't do anything to endanger yourself or others around you. People will pressure you to do wheelies and just gunning it on short roads so you can show off, but rememeber it doesn't look that good when you fuck up and put yourself on the ground, because you are the one who gets injured not them.

Other than that get a course or two and even take advanced courses after a few months.

I'm 6'1" and slim and my first bike was a GSXR 600 and I loved it! Plenty of pwer and TONS of fun! Just recently sold it to buy my wife a new car, wish I could have kept it or upgraded to a 1000cc bike!

You will find lots of brand loyal posts (mine being Kawasaki), but truth is ANY 600cc sport bike is just fine power wise. In fact you will not be able to notice a difference in the bikes besides the colors and graphics.
I can say that the R6 is more of a track bike, and I would reserve it for a more experienced rider.

All of the newer 600's will out perform you in every aspect for many years to come. They are track bikes with serious capabilities, the riders usually arent.

Take a MSF and pick a used bike up with colors you enjoy. Buy your gear, and wear it all the time. You never know when it's your time to fall and I assume you have grown attached to your skin, so protect it.

An they really are trying to kill you.
