Default Cobra owner needs your help

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm hoping some of you guys might be able to help me out. I have an 03 Cobra with a single T76 turbo setup. I recently purchased a Blitz SBC iD Electronic boost controller and I am having a little trouble with the install.

Prior to the controller I was running 16 psi. I have a Turbonetics Evolution external wastegate with a 9lb spring. My problem is I can't seem to get the boost controller to run the boost I am programming into it. No matter what I do my boost shoots to 20+psi even though the boost controller is set for 16psi.

I've already double checked all the vacuum lines. The IN fitting on the boost controller solenoid goes to the intake elbow just in front of the throttle body, and the OUT fitting goes to the top shiney side of the wastegate. A vacuum line also goes from the cold side of the turbo to the bottom, non-shiney side, of the wastegate.

Even when I turn the controller off I still get that overboost however, once I pull the vacuum hose off the top side of the wastegate (I stick a screw into the tube) the boost level will drop off to the spring setting in the wastegate.

I'm hoping since you guys deal with turbos all the time you might be able to help me out. Thanks.

Thanks for the link but, I know I have it hooked up correctly according to my instructions and according to the pics on that link.

However, what was this nipple thing on the wastegate they were talking about? Before I was not using any controller, just the springs in the wastegate. I was running 16psi with no problem. Now the boost shoots to 20+psi before I can get out of it.

Was I supposed to turn some nipple screw thing on the wastegate (sorry, I'm new to the turbo thing and don't know the terms for everything.

DO you have a setting for it that is supposed to run 0 duty so it just runs the spring pressure

Yea, I have that setting, but it still boosts to 20+psi. It is hooked up correctly according to the instructions I have and the Blitz website for an Electronic boost controller not a manual one. Believe me, that was the first, second, and third thing I checked. Also, I found this on the BLITZ FAQ site:

Q: I’ve just install my Blitz boost controller, and it is not holding boost, is it broken?

A: Make sure the vacuum lines going to the solenoid unit is installed correctly, and it should not be more than 3 feet long because boost response can be poor and boost spikes or surges may occur. Double check if you have the boost controller on the correct setting (WG=external wastegate, AC=actuator). The Dual SBC Spec S is only good for 17psi and under, and the rest of our boost controllers are good up to 36psi. For test purpose, set the boost controller’s boost setting as 0 and the gain setting as 0. Now your car should be boosting stock boost or wastegate spring boost level. If your car is not boosting near stock boost or wastegate spring boost level at this point, something during the boost controller install was not done correctly or there might be a mechanical issue with your vehicle.

Sure enough, I went and checked and my boost controller was set on AC instead of WG. I switched it over and will have to take it for a spin in the morning to see what happens.

let us know if that fixed your problem. now i use to have a big spike problem like you did on my 60 trim, but i had the lines backwards on my boost controller and it was a manual but the concept is the same you can adjust yours inside the car i can't. i did eventually figure out that if i run a manual boost controller one line from the nipple from the turbo to my boost controller and then the one to the wastegate. i connected it to the bottom nipple on the wastegate. i had a tial wastegate im not sure if turbonetics has two nipples on it. i ran 18 pounds no problem no spike no nothing. or you can buy a upgraded spring instead of the 9lb spring you can get a 15lb spring and run about 13-17lbs of boost just off of your wastegate w/o a boost controller.
