Default Who says I never wrote a how to? How To turn your fans on at 180 degrees

How to: Turn your fans on at 180 degrees to supplement your 180 degree thermostat. You know, so that it actually runs at 180 degrees even at a stoplight. Cause thats when you need that extra power right? On the big launch to blow the doors off that Geo metro.

1) Open up your advantage software and bring up your current tune.

2) go to the "Environment" menu and click on "scaler"

3) go to "AC off Hight MPH speed fan On" (these values are in Celsius so if you want something different you need to convert the value) Set value "87"

4) go to "AC off High MPH Low Speed Fan On" set value 85

5) go to "AC off High MPH Medium Speed Fan On" set value 86

6) go to "AC off Low MPH High Speed Fan On" set value 84

7) go to "AC off Low MPH Low Speed Fan On" set value 82

8) go to "AC off Low MPH Medium Speed Fan On" set value 83

9) go to "AC ON High Speed Fan on" set value 83

10) go to "AC ON Low Speed Fan On" set value 81

11) go to "AC On Medium Speed Fan On" set value 82

There you go, a how to. It should work well at any speed in any condition without over running the fans. It's what is flashed into my car.

Oh damn!!! I knew what everything was, but I never bothered to play with the settings. Now I have something to base it all on. I think I am going to do this when I get my car back... Hey, do you have any part numbers for some 180 thermostats that work for our cars? Thanks Stew

does this keep your fans running all the time at 180deg? Right now my fans seem to keep running once the car warms up... stoplights and all other times. (even with a 180deg tstat.)

Yes, I designed this setup to run the fans almost contantly below cruise. You can increase the temp differential if you want to allow the fans to cycle.

Shouldn't you flash it maybe 15 degrees less than what the fans come on stock?

I thought the stock unit opened at 195 to let water flow, but the fans came on between 205-210 degrees?

If you have your fans click on at 180 at the same time the stats opens, wouldn't that keep your car in cold start mode (rich condition) and add to your cold start emissions?

Maybe somebody from SCT should post about how they modify coolant system so that you keep your emissions in check (no changing back and forth) and yet keep the car's timing up by not allowing it to reach threshold temps under a load.

Thanks for the tips Oj!

Closed loop is more based on time rather than engine temp. On a cold start when its 50 degrees outside, your engine switched to Closed loop 14.5:1 A/F in about 30 seconds. In this amount of time the engine is probably only 100-130Fat the most. In the old days, the engine temp had to be about 175F degrees before entering closed loop. Chrylser has really ramped up the O2 heater to cut cold start emmissions.

Also the fuel modifier for engine temp at 80c is barely 1% and 0% at 90c, so if you interpolate a value to 83c, the ecu is barely adding any fuel at all, maybe .4%. But again at 80-83c the engine is almost exclusively running in closed loop, so any added fuel is just taken back out again to reach a stoich F/A.

BTW to those that care, one of the fan relays is pulse width modulated. Hence their being 3 fan speeds.

No, it isn't pulsewidth modulated. Look at the schematics. The third speed comes from 'wiring' the fans in series vs. parallel.
