Default SCT LiveLoad SUCCESSFUL Under Ubuntu and VirtualBox

I wanted to get away from Windows after seeing how fast my custom build PC ran with Ubuntu 8.04 installed. The only problem was my SCT flash. Windows is necessary to update the XCal2. I grabbed a copy of the free software VirtualBox and installed a Windows XP virtual machine on my Ubuntu PC. After some testing, I got the USB support to work, installed SCT Live Load, and was able to connect to the XCal2

I can write a how to if anyone is interested in a similar setupSCT

Curious if you had tried anything prior to the virtualbox that allowed a PC app to run within Linux, or you went straight to the virtualbox?

What MS OS versions are required for the calc software, will it run fine on win98se?

WINE might work. There are few different virtualization solutions out there. QEMU, VMWare Player, Client and Server, Xen, etc. Here is a list if you are interested in more: TechComparison - Linux Virtualization Wiki

Virtual Box is great under linux, SUN bought them recently and the development cycle has been very strong, meaning they are fixing more bugs and adding new features at a very fast rate.

The Calc software AFAIK has been in every version of windows. Are you talking about LiveLoad or Advantage III? Those will require Windowx XP SP2 or above. Some people run it on Vista but its not supported.

Virutal PC is about your best option out there I believe for the G4s. I have an intel mac which i run VMwareFusion on and run Advantage III that way, but AFAIK, Vmware fusion or Parallels wont run on the G4.

I used to have a old dual 867 Powermac and I used to run VirutalPC to boot windows XP. It wasnt the fastest thing in the world, but it did the job. If you have a 1+ ghz G4 with at least a gig of ram I would say you could do the same, but don't expect it to be a PC replacement Should be fine for running live load or Advantage though.

i would imagine that VirtualBox would run on OSX the same as it runs on Ubuntu.

I was going to try wine, but i figured if i can get it to work in a VM that would be a better option.

FWIW I was running it on Vista 64-bit prior to installing Ubuntu with no problems.
