Tucson: Who's up for a turbo swap this Saturday? :(
yep, my car is smokin up a storm... me thinks the supposedly rebuilt turbo wasnt completely rebuilt because Im 99% sure it's leaking oil! pretty certain the gasket in the turbo wasnt replaced. the car is puffin white/blue burnt oil smellin smoke whenever I decelerate after I boost. I dont think its the head gasket cause it doesnt smell sweet and the smoke seems more indicative of just oil burning. Although my coolant is unusually low. I will know for sure as soon as I take the charge pipe off.
So I still have my stock turbo... got plans on putting it back on the car (assuming my new one is bad), but I'd like to get a little help if at all possible. Joe is out of town... at least I think he is, so somebody else wanna step up to the plate and help a brotha out? Im available saturday and monday. I can do it on base on saturday, but if I do it monday they are closed. If I have no other choice, Im available sunday morning 7am - 1pm, but I'd rather do it saturday.
took me about 5-6 hrs at joes house , just taking our time to swap out the turbo and manifold. So I figure this shouldnt take more than 4-5 since I dont have to worry about the manifold (that is staying in unless there is good reason to swap it out with the stocker)
I'm more than likely up for it, however it'd be a learning experience for me as I've never done a turbo swap before so I wouldn't actually be much "help" I'm guessing.
On a side note, I've got a few things to do to my car as well (motor mount inserts, booger bushings, replace broken wheel stud and probably an oil change) so if we get some kind of meet going at the Auto Hobby shop I'll probably grab a bay and do that stuff too while all this is going on.
you sound about as experienced as I am... your welcome to help out though.
- so far I've done:
-struts
-brakes
-booger bushings
-clutch change ( 2x )
-turbo swap
-motor mounts
-intake / exhaust ( idk how many times ) never done a full exhaust swap though.
pretty much anything mechanical doesn't scare me to much, it's mostly the electrical stuff that I shy away from. This particular job however has alot of steps to it and Im not sure I can remember all of it on my own.
Wow that sucks man. Yeah, I'm in Yuma. Are you sure it's the turbo? Did you check and see if the lines are all tight?
Anyway. Just the turbo is an easy job. 2 hours max. Remove battery. Take the intake and charge pipe off. You need a short 16mm for the back side water, top oil lines and an 8mm for the bottom two oil drain bolts for the turbo. Then you just remove the v-band clamp in the middle of the turbo and remove. Reverse process. Done.

When I get in there and start messing with everything I will have a better idea of what's going on with my ride. as of right now all I know is Im low on coolant, low on oil and my car is puffin out tons of blueish white smoke after I boost and whenver I start the car. It actually backfired on start up
today
saturday morning. like 8am.

Yeah, I haven't done a whole lot. Pretty much just stuff I've needed to do to my car. I always try to do everything myself if at all possible (that way I learn + save $$$). I've done:
-Intake
-Intercooler
-Injectors
-WGA
-Pads and Rotors
All pretty simple stuff, but I haven't needed to do anything difficult like a clutch yet (although it sounds like you guys around Tucson have that down like an oil change , it's still somewhat intimidating to me).
I'm going to try and head to the Auto Hobby Shop tomorrow and do all that stuff I mentioned and be around if you need an extra set of hands. I say "try" because I'm not feeling too great right now, so if I do that stuff or not depends on how I'm feeling in the morning.
Well, almost 9. I figure I will go down to the place on base and give it my best shot. Joe, you make it sound so easy, this probably gonna take me more than 2hrs.
well, it's been a long day... not done yet either. luckily Joe picked up his phone, because I was missing a few steps on the re-install that woulda killed me!
I will bring out the turbo tonight! mucho shaft play....
definitely a very shiity rebuild! that turbo is toast!
