Default Vid editing guys, I need your help!!!

Hey guys. Not sure how many of you video edit but I use Vegas 4.0 and sometimes Adobe Premiere.

My problem is that after I have rendered my project. My file is HUGE. I've tried everything in the rendering dialog box to try and make the file size smaller. Most of my .AVI's come out being like 300+MB sometimes even a GIG or two lol. I DL alot of peoples videos off the net and all of them have good quality and are only like 14MBs or around that area. I've even tried opening my newly made .AVI in Windows Movie Maker to save it to a .wmv and the compression just KILLS the quality and sound. How do these people or you guys get low file sizes and still retain pretty decent quality?

Thanks for your help!
