Default egt sensor placement question

ok, i have herd some conflicting info on egt placement, i have heard from a "very well informed builder" that the egt for a turbo should never be placed in the exaust manifold do to false high readings due to pressure, his recomendation is to place it in the o2 pipe close to the turbo, then i have seen reputable tuners place the thermocopuler in the exaust manifold of srt's i just want to know if any one knows about this

first ive ever heard of anything like that..pressure has nothing to do with it.i really dont see the purpose of a single egt sensor anyway but thats me.if you had equal length runners and had 4 egt sensors thats a different story

pressure effects O2 sensors, but not EGT probes

Think of it this way if you put it in the exhaust pipe how are you going to determine the difference in temp from the cyls to what your actually seeing on the gauge? It will be much lower but how much?

A wideband is best, EGT can compliment it

the reason you want to watch egt's is to see how hot cylinder temps are. if its after the turbo, it has cooled drastically and not accurate. what is the point of having a gauge if its not accurate?

running an egt sensor on each runner is the answer but you cant do that unless you have a tubular manifold.after the turbo is senseless ,if you must have one one it should go in the manifold directly in the exhaust stream coming out of the head

OK. I installed my EGT Sensor, and have pics of the sensor install.

What's needed: 2 people, a drill, a tap, and a small vacuum.

Mark and center punch the spot you want, start drilling, with the vacuum hose right on the side of the bit collecting all shavings. once you get a good start have the 2nd person start the car, and hold about 2000 rpms. Keep the vacuum close and keep sucking up the shavings. once you're through you actually feel all the hot shavings blow out at you, so have safety glasses on! Next shut the car off, let it cool.

Have that 2nd person start the car back up and hold 2000rpms and start tapping with some sort of hot glove on. I could not find a hot glove, so I pressed an old socket on to the end of my tap, and used a ratchet, and 1' extension. Again, while tapping have safety glasses on, the shavings all come flying at you, and they're hot!

Done. Install the sensor. I like to put a little copper gasket in the threads. I don't know if it helps, but it can't hurt, just dont get it on the tip of the sensor.

As a note.. The reason manufacturers say to put it after the turbo, is because they cannot take the liability of having someone drill and tap there manifold and let metal shavings damage the customers turbo. If they told you that you had to remove your manifold for the install, then they would not sell as many. Common sense, for a business smart person.

Anyway the pics of my install are here. Comments are always welcome.
EGT Sensor Install <-- Go google!

Oh, and this install was done using PLX's SM-EGT, to complement my SM-AFR, both connected to my DM-100. :-) The O-LED gauge is badass! PLX gauge

i have a EGT gauge, it came with the car and i installed it in my manifold.
i dont think these gauges are all that important, if it didnt come with the car i would have spent the money else where. cuz if your EGT's are too high its already too late for your motor
i do use to to go by before i shut my car off if i dont want to use my turbo timer.
