Default Tranny problems...2nd, 4th, Reverse. Someone please help me!

The problem:

Can't shift in 2nd and 4th easy. I have to shift hard from 1st to 2nd for it to engage. Same thing with 4th. Have to be in 3rd and shift down ( not downshift ) kindda hard. If I try to shift into either gear from neutral or downshift it won't engage.

Then I notice I can't engage reverse at all.

I searched for about 2 hours reading a lot of tranny issues and the only one that actually sounded like my problem found a simple fix that wasn't my problem. ( his retainer clip holding one shifter cable to the body of the shifter was missing ).

Thinking hard about what it is it probably is the cables. Since it happens with all the gears on the bottom shifts. Anyone know how to check them to pinpoint where the problem is?

Anyone think it is something else? 1st, 3rd and 5th are fine with no shifting problems. I have a mopar sts and will try going back to the stocker if I can't find anything. Thanks ahead to anyone that has anything good to add.

Justin

I to have the same problem. It's going to the Dealer. I've checked everything, and I'm stumped. 2nd gear is a biatch to get into, pop's outta 3rd occasionally, and reverses is damn near impossible to get into!!!

It's not the Mopar STS, so I wouldn't bother changing it out.

How is your other gears? Specially fourth gear? My odd number gears are totally fine. My problem seems a little different than yours. Reverse doesn't engage at all. Trying to find a parking spot takes a bit longer. Still will try the stock shifter...what do I have to lose...15 mins.

The nearest dealer to me is closing up shop so I don't really want to deal with them. The next is one too far for me to travel back and fourth to. Don't think a dealership would be my first choice anyways. Warrenty is up.

So I might end up going to the nearest transmission shop. Thanks for your input though.

Fourth gear is fine. When the car is warm, or at operating temp, under half throttle or WOT, I have problem's shifting into 2nd....It's like I'm locked out of it. I have to let off for a second, and then it'll go in.

2nd to 3rd grind's (Very slightly) 5th gear is cool.

The car is babied to hell! Tranny fluid changed every 5-8K...I have OCD about the car.

Car is going into the Dealer tomorrow, and will be getting a tranny.

I gess it wouldn't hurt to change out the shifter, doesn't take long.

Well found the problem. The retainer clips on the transmission side came off. So they would move when trying to shift and thus not actually shifting. Glad it is a simple fix although I don't know where to get replacement parts other than a dealership. I work before they open till after they close.

Tried a place like TWM short shifter company but they don't make the replacement for the transmission side. If anyone knows where to get it please lmk.

My tranny is acting kinda funny too - VERY notchy lately. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the summer heat, or maybe I need to change my tranny fluid... haven't changed it in about 30k+ miles

Update on my tranny, (I made a thread yesterday, thought I'd post it in here to)

The bushing on the shifter cable that connect's to the top of the tranny, was completly gone!! So I ordered a new one, and it should be here in about a week. ($92.00 for it, my cost)

I was wondering why there was so much play in the shifter when it was in any gear....

Guess we gotta watch our shifting while in high hp/tq #s...

Where did you order your parts?

EDISKRAD EHT yea i think it was your thread. Where the retainer clip came off on the shifter side... wish that was my case. Getting them on the tranny side looks like a pita to get to.

You DO realize that the tranny fluid is supposed to be changed EVERY 18,000mi...no?
