whenever the car is warmed up, at idle it will go to 230 degrees and stay until the fans kick in. then when i drive it NORMALY some times it will go up to 230 and stay. I tried a new thermostat, didnt work. then tried a 180 degree thermostat, didnt work. kept going up to 230. and changed the coolant temp sensor. also i can smell a hint of coolant from the inside when i have the heater on. So im assuming that its a heater core. what do you guys think?
wow thats not good!! Are you sure the t stat is in the right direction?? Sounds like its not opening up at all. You need this fixed ASAP or else say bye bye to motor.
every time this does happen though, i turn the heater on full blast and it cools its back down to 195 (operating temp). it does stay most of the time at operating temp. its jus some times it gets up there. I think its the heater core is blocked or something
Have you bled the system of air bubbles yet? Sounds like you have a air bubble or pocket in the cooling system. There is a bleed valve on the upper thermostat area, so give that a shot and it should fix your problem and return temps back to normal.

ive tried draining it and refilling the whole system. one time i pulled up to my house and turned the car off and ran inside teh house real quick then came back out and heard bubbling from the inside of the car (i think from the heater core)

Yeah you're not in a relatively hot climate, so that rules that out. I live here in Las Vegas, and my temps have never gone above 215, even when it was 108ish outside.
Your fans at high speed should be coming on around 208. Is this happening? If so, open the little bleeder screw at the bottom of the t-stat housing when filling the system up. Close it once fluid comes out. Also, just go ahead and replace your radiator cap; they are cheap enough and easy enough.
