Talking Another sound problem?

Alright, when the car was stock, it made this noise.

Here goes at trying to describe it.

While driving, putting the car in gear, and first starting to accelerate you can hear a "fluttering" or "marble rolling growl" sound from the engine bay.

I always thought this was just a normal sound with something to do with the WG area. We can't tell exactly what it is as it only happens during driving, not at idle. Some people are saying it sounds like a throwout bearing. It usually only did it like in third gear, if I was coming from a slow roll @ 20 into 3rd. It just did it this morning starting off in 1st.

I can't think of a way to record the sound, but from the driver's seat it sounds more of a fluttering sound. The test driven SRT I drove made the same sound, I thought it was normal.

Any ideas? And its not in relation to the intake portion.

Not exactly, but slightly after - read the manual, I was shocked too. Still only 1000 miles, using the recommended shift speeds.

Trust me, I know it seems wrong shifting three times before I even hit the speed limit of 35 around here... but I'm just following the book!

Now someone respond on the noise please

Have no idea what the sound may be, but I can't imagine being in 3rd under 35. When you shift into 3rd, what are your rpm's? I don't think mine ever get under 2k. When I've been in third from a dead stop (missed 1st) it made some kind of flutter or bogged down sound.

Hrm.

Normally around 34 into 3rd I'm around 1.8k I think.
For fuel reasons I genrally try to keep it around 2k.
If I'm driving the car awhile I'll wind it out a little, but have yet to go past 5k overall.

The sound I was talking about, to me, is a flutter sound. Other people describe it as a rolling marble / growl sound. It usually only did it shifting into third ocassionally around 22-25ish. The car doesn't bog, but makes the sound. This morning it did it just starting off in first, so now I'm wondering.

Thats your problem.
If you shift at 3k in each gear, I highly dount you will be at 30MPh in 3rd gear.

Sounds to me like drivetrain chatter all because
1.8K rpm and 3rd gear is a NO NO in my book

Also if you press the throttle like a little girl, the ECU will open up the surge valve to try and keep the car outta boost, hence the lil flutter.

listen, you are shifting like my grandma. the sound that you are hearing is the low speed fluttering of gears. you dont have enough speed or rpm's for your shifts. the book is WRONG!

Ok, I appreciate the responses cali, more so the mature response on WHY the car is making the noise - - but it seems cali you fail to realize I know I'm babying the car. I've admited to it, to me 1000 is still breaking it in. Sorry for answering your questioning of my shift pattern, but its in the book,

I'm breaking it in the way Dodge recommends. Read the manual, and attempt to follow the recommended shifting for normal usage. It's hard, it took getting use to, but thats what it says!

What you guys said sounds exactly like the problem - but today it made that exact same sound starting off in 1st gear from a stop. So now I'm a little confused.

I guess I could be the 17 year old kid who did a burnout leaving the parking lot with his SRT-4, coming back the same week for broken motor mounts and being denied warranty for abusing the car. To me this is an investment, and I'm not looking to beat the shit out of it.

madmad,
If you take off with too low rpms and dont flow into the gas properly you will get drive train chatter. I had my wife try to drive stick for the first time after I installed my short throw shifter....if she didnt stall in first, all we heard was drivetrain chatter.

If you can hear the noise at say 40+mph it may be the throwout bearing, but like cali says it may be your driving...

sounds like drivetrain chatter to me too. It's just from shifting at too low of a RPM. It is a perfectly normal sound.

Let me say:

By driving your car like this you are taking alot more life out of it than you would by shifting at 3000-4000 and cruising at 3k.

Cruising below 2k in the car is absurd, its pretty much impossible.

I am willing to beat you are hearing gear chatter, bad gear chatter.
First to second gear is not a problem at low RPMS because of the gearing, but once you get into 3rd you better have some more Revs built.

Shifting at 3k seems to be golden for everyone here.

I prefer 4k, but I often go over.

Drive it harder and it'll be fine!
