I got my Toybox 2.0 yesterday morning and finally got a chance to install it today and take it out for a spin. I now have my Toybox 2.0 in my arm rest with about 2.5 feet of wire so I have it coiled up in my arm rest all the time but when I'm drag racing, I'll be mounting it with a small piece of velcro on the HVAC surround bezel. Here's a list of things I used:
Electrical tape
Soldering iron
Solder
Wire strippers
Razor blade
Zip ties
First and foremost, I disconnected the battery. I'm sure you can get away with it by not disconnecting it, but it's SOP for me. Next up I unmounted my Toybox 1.0 from my inner arm rest (re; I pulled it off it's double-sided tape) and pulled it out a bit exposing the wire bundle. I cut the old box off with about 8 inches left from the 1.0 box itself. Next I cut off some of the grey wire cover and stripped the individual wires. You can see what I'm talking about in these pictures:
Basically, I just stripped the the wires and matched them up by color. Nothing against anybody using crimp on connectors, but I'm used to soldering all my connections. I just feel it's the most reliable, and there's nothing that pisses me off more than having to go through and check all my connections when a problem arises. I insulated each wire and taped the whole thing up. Next up, disconnect the white wire on the bottom PCI slot on the PCM. The instructions call for cutting the white wire and connecting it to the VIOLET/YELLOW wire, like so:
I buttoned everything back up and took it out for a spin. Two words; BAD ASS. I played around with the interface a little and it's really easy to use. I definitely had to print out what menu did what but after a while I'm sure I'll be able to memorize them all. I tried the following combinations:
Gear_____DAB
1________1
2________2
3________3
4________3
5________3
Then:
Gear_____DAB
1________0
2________2
3________3
4________3
5________3
Then finally:
Gear_____DAB
1________0
2________1
3________3
4________3
5________3
I found that the last one worked the best for me. I had plenty of traction in first, second and hell, all of the gears. With DAB 1 in first, I would spin. With DAB 2 in second, I would spin most of the gear. As for mods, I'm on stock wheels, shitty Riken Raptor tires, S3, Perrin TBE, Maxxfab 3in. O2, JMB SRI, Ebay FMIC, AGP dog bones, stock clutch and stock axles. All these pulls were not on HOM so I'm interested to see what HOM does differently.
All in all, this is one of the best mods I have ever purchased for this car, other than the S3 of course. It's an easy install, especially if you already have the Toybox 1.0. I posted this as a review and not as a how-to. I'm sure there are others that want their units mounted other places, but for my purposes this works out the best.
