the more i read into the PCV system and check valves, the more varying stories i get..
I am a Stratus owner and have just finished rebuilding my engine with mostly SRT4 parts...Pistons, Rods, Rings, Oil setup (pump, pan, cooler, ect..), Water pump, Tensioner, Idler...And I'm capping it off with a Super20G turbo with a wastegate that pulls a minimum of 10psi w/o a MBC..
So before I put this motor in, I'm gonna need to hammer out these small little details.
I now have the SRT4 valve cover and am trying to understand it. My stratus one had 2 hose nipples, one of which had a PCV valve in line. It looks like the SRT4 PCV goes right in the cover?
The Stratus performance guy that hooked me up with the turbo (Rich from Dreamspeed) told me to just put a vacuum cap on the PCV valve and put a catch can between the filter side of the turbo and the nipple on the valve cover...No Check Valves or anything. I trust him because he's done some brilliant things with this car but that seemed off to everything else I've ever heard..
So my question is how do I go about this? Keep in mind, I don't have anything but a bare valve cover right now...No PCV valves...Nothing. Although I do have a very large box of all sizes of vacuum lines..

He's right about the concept of the PCV and why you should just be able to put that on and be done with it like it would be stock. However it for some reason is not strong enough on our car and will leak boost. Putting a stronger more durable check valve means you can install a catch can and not worry if any of the clamps are going to leak. Your friend is right but the stock PCV is not strong enough.
what I was saying is basically not even using the PCV...putting a vacuum cap on it that blocks anything from going in or out..
then since the filter side of the turbo is always sucking, therefore pulling vacuum, I would connect the catch can between that and the valve cover...and no check valve should be needed..
Nope will not work. Need to pull fresh air through the crankcase. You need fresh air in and you need to pull the now contaminated fresh air and vapors out.
IMO try to mimic the stock PCV system and then maybe improve it by putting a catch can between the PCV and the intake with a check valve. Put a mini breather on fresh air intake or put a catch can there as well.
IMO its important to get fresh air in and get the contaminated air out. How you do it effectively and without going nuts and spending a bunch of money is up to you. Why not use the SRT valve cover and a new PCV?
The stock SRT PCV valve is $7.99 from modernperformance. Where do you get expensive? I definately would not recommend you capping the PCV valve off the valve cover. Like the other pose...you would have no fresh air source during the venting of your valve cover and the gasses would be ultimately re-routed through your intake and turbo.

Or it would build so much pressure it will flip the seal on your rear main seal. Now you need a clutch.
see i knew that didnt sound quite like a good idea...and thanks for pointing me to modernperformance...the dealer lists them QUITE expensively..
Sounds like my best plan of action is the breather on the drivers side (rear of the engine)...stock PCV in the stock location...catch can...check valve...then to the intake..
So with that ironed out, how badly does it matter what catch can I use? And it seems that it's pretty much been settled that the PT check valve is the best...but its too expensive for me!! Are there do's and donts of buying check valves? Please provide your tips, tricks, and pointers..
and on a less important (maybe) note..
Since my car never had a turbo before, obviously all my piping is custom fitted mandrel bends. Basically what I'm saying is I have no hose nipple on the filter side of the turbo (or on any of the piping for that matter)...So what would be the best course of action for attaching the hose on there? The same source with the blocked PCV idea says he's just drilled a hole the size of the hose and put a rubber gromet in it and force fitted a hose in there (hard plastic adaptor I would assume). Sounds too ghetto to me and I'm wondering if there is a better approach..
