Well they replaced the seals in the head and got the car running and it's still smoking. They thought maybe residue in the exhaust so they unbolted the exhaust and ran it. Nope still smoking. took off the catch can and ran it. Still smoking. So now he's going back to the turbo. He's going to run it so it starves the turbo of oil but the impeller doesn't spin. Which makes sense so if it stops smoking we know it's the turbo. My question is if for some reason it is the turbo what kind of warranty do I have? It has less than 5k miles on it. I paid $1400 for it, $950 for a shortblock and labor for everything else. I hope to god it's not my turbo! Just curious as to what kinetic or you can do if infact it's the turbo.
Fyi, Dave from Midland might call you tomorrow (tues) just to get your opinion and advice on what might be wrong.

At this point I would have to say turbo but if the seals were out of it then there should be some shaft play??? There should be a warranty on it no questions but the real problem (if it is the turbo) would be what caused the failure??? The next thing that has me bothered is the motor, what caused it to kill cyl #1??? There are a ton of questions that I would have to ask in order for it to be a turbo. When Dave calls I will have him check a few things.
The real problem... you had a dead motor no questions about it (me and Dave both agree on this), now there is another issue that we can not figure out and I have not really be involved with this car since you took it to Dave. Now with that said, I am more then willing to help out (as I did with the motor) and I will continue to help you in getting this solved, but I need to check out a few things on that motor. I suspect that I can pick it up now, correct? If so let me tear into that and I will get back to you.
I suspect that there may have been a bit of the ring land that got chewed up and digested by the motor. If that is the case then we might be fighting something that is a bit of an unknown (like where that ring land went). I would like to do that as soon as possilbe, get back to me when you can, thanks.
Hey thanks for the quick response. I'll let dave know tomorrow that you will come by and grab the s/b from him (as long as tomorrow work for ya). Maybe you guys can brainstorm a bit about what's going on. There is a bit of shaft play I checked when I got the car back last week for a couple days and noticed it. Still smokes a blue/ black smoke and I guess quite a bit comes out when the rev it up to 3k. Look for his call tomorrow or just go down there and grab the motor.
They saw 10% leakdown in cyl #1. He said it was not enough to be too concerned about but w/ the smoke it being past the head he agreed it was most likely the piston and also agreed w/ you. They then replaced the whole s/b, installed and still is smoking the same at idle when the car warms up and decel. Not so much if at all when cruising. I then took it back after a couple days. They then blamed the head. He said valve guide seals. Today I find out that is not the case. Head is fine they replaced the seals anyway. They replaced the pcv valve as well and they unbolted the exhaust (thinking residue in the exhaust) still smoking. Now he's going back to the turbo. He's going to run the test tomorrow morn and I should know around 11-12 tomorrow. I wish you weren't so busy taking it to a place that doesn't deal w/ srt's is brutal...

Get me the shops number and I will call them tomorrow. It could just be that the motor needs to seat the rings. Either way I will brain storm with him. Other then that tomorrow will not work for me to pick up that motor, Thursday for sure.
Its really hit or miss on weather the restrictor is needed. Garrett says yes, several others say no. So with that said, I will look into it more and see what I can come up with. I can tell you that the small AN line that feeds the turbo should be enough to keep the oil levels down but then again that could be it as well. I will check into that tomorrow.
Ok here is their number...(253) 531-4331 ask for Dave. They open early I think 8am or so and close at 5pm. If infact it is the turbo then I'll need one asap while the other is getting looked at. So I'll probably need new lines as well. Anything in stock? I'm thinking gt3076r this time around.
From what I understand the dbb turbos need them while the standard journal bearings do not. Maybe it is just a mattr of opinion I'm not sure either way I guess we'll know more tomorrow. Thanks for the help and get to bed you need to be up bright and early ready to diagnose my car problems...haha

Nothing sitting here right now, would you be upgrading or just installing it to get around for a while? Get back to me on that, thanks.
Just installing to get around. It's been I think since April or May since I actually drove it like it should be driven. So I'm figuring that if it is the turbo it will take possibly a week to find out what's wrong w/ the turbo and another week to finally get it back in and everything. Plus I want to go w/ something different. Any other suggestions besides the dbb 50? I want a solid tune on the dtec and 400whp/400trq. I have the clutch I just need the bottleneck fix and maybe a larger rail.

gluck man I hope you figure it out soon. I also heard something about the oil restriction being needed, but there are so many mixed suggestions its hard to know whats 100%. To achieve the 400/400 a 50 trim will do just fine without the bottlekneck fix. I did 404/406 with 6 degrees of timing being pulled on 24psi and pump gas with johns FTM and stock motor.
Awesome good to hear. I'm sure I'll be fine hitting that I just want to be safe about it. I hit 332whp/343wtq at 18psi and the stock clutch slipping. I have no doubt that at 24 psi and the stg 3 clutch I'll hit that number. Thank for the encouragement I need it right now...
Have they contacted you yet? Looks like it's the turbo. It stopped smoking when they bypassed it. So who should I order from? I think he wants to talk to you first though. He said I just may need the bb cartridge that I need but I want to be 100% sure before I spend money. You can all them if you want. I'd like to order today hopefully.
I guess Dave tried calling you and left a voicemail. Anyway I called kinetic and left a voicemail. I also emailed Devin at kinetic to see about returning the turbo. I mentioned I originally bought the turbo from ptperformance and asked for an rma. Hopefully I will here something soon. I just need to know what the next step is.
