Default $20 Stock WGA Spring Upgrade

Ok all. I know some of you might be thinking this is another spring mod well it is BUT we will be changing the spring inside the WGA. This mod makes the stock WGA act exactly like an after market performance WGA. Its very stable and holds 18+PSI to redline without any problems at all. Here is the instructions:

1. Purchase a WGA update spring from PTP http://www.srtforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=241

2. Remove the stock WGA from the car. (see how to section in forums)

3. Mark the position of the arm coming out of the WGA with some paint or a marker. The reson for this is the WGA arm can rotate around once the WGA is taken apart. The arm has be be pointed in the right direction to be put back on the car so mark this!!

4. Around the edge of the WGA there is a lip that you can pry open using various tools. Take a look around you can use a very small pry bar small set of vice grips etc. Be careful not to bend the bottom under the lip since that can create sealing problems later. HINT: you don't have to completly bend it out stright just enough to wiggle the two pieces apart.

5. With the WGA apart you will see a single 8mm nut in the middle of the rubber diaphram. The nut will be very tight and tough to remove because it is a self locking nut. Slowly take the pieces out and put them in order as you remove them. There is not much to it. Take enough of the pieces out to remove the stock spring.

6. Place the PTP WGA spring in the place of the stock one. You will notice that the PTP spring is shorter and has a smaller diameter but it is much stronger and due to the smaller diameter it will sit higher up in the backing plate which makes it exactly the right height to match the stock placement.

7. Center the Spring and put the other parts back on the arm shaft and finally put the nut back on.

8. Before puting the WGA back together blow it out with air or make sure there are now metal particles or dirt inside that could damage the rubber diaphram later.

9. Position the arm pointing in the direction your marked in step 2 and make sure it doesn't move while you are putting it back together.

10. Take the other half of the WGA case and put it back together. Use pliers or channel locks or some thing like that to press the lip back down over the other half of the WGA case. Tack it down in a few places around the lip to get everything held in place. Now go around and squezze the lip back down all around. We also took a light plastic hammer and went around the lip taping it down. The lip does not have to be really smashed down. The rubber boot will seal up very easily since there is a raised lip on the casing that seals it for you.

11. The sealing of the WGA should be checked at this point. You can use a vacum pump or you can go getto style and pull the arm out completley then put a vac cap on the nipple of the WGA. With the nipple capped the WGA should not move back in completly it should hold the presure your created when you let go of the arm. If you do find a leak listen for it and apply some extra presure to that point with pliers or what ever until the leak stops.

12. Put WGA back on car.

13. Go out for a test drive.

Results:

I have Greddy EBC and what I can do now is amazing. The WGA will require no adjustment at all to do this. You will need a boost controler of some sort though to achive the same results.

Minimum boost : 6PSI
Max Boost : 22.5 PSI (18PSI to redline, done with WI for the high boost)

This thing holds right to the end though. I mean I will hold 20 PSI to about 5600RPM then at the end it will fall to 18PSI which is perfect. The best thing is all surge and bouncy needle syndrom is completly gone.

This spring IMO is the perfect spring and is only available from PTP from what I can tell. He's a cool guy anyway and for $20( right now anyway) its a steal.

I know that other shops have done this and sell them for $150.

We also checked the rubber diaphrams for strenth and found that the stock rubber is actually better then some of thre aftermarket rubber diaphrams in other WGA's. Its definitly tough enough to handle the extra spring. I expect this mod to last a long time. And even if it does go, I can pick up a new WGA from the forums for about $10-$20 for a stocker.

The best thing about this mod is that when the dealer sees under the hood they will not be able to tell you moded the WGA. I think this MOD would also benefit a stock setup as well for better holding 15PSI to redline since I recall that the stocker will fall off to 12PSI some times.

Anyway good luck all. Feel free to PM with questions.

That is real neat that it worked out for you. I have the WGA springs instock and ready to sell for $15.00 + shipping ($2.50). I have several WGA available as well so I might give this a shot to see how well it works. Big "THANK YOU" to turbosetch for posting up on his results.

Man dude that spring is the pefect size for this. That WGA seals back up just fine with very little effort thanks to the raised lip around the casing. Boost control is super smooth with the EBC.

OT: I am looking for a killer deal on a APEXI-R EBC so I can do shift / speed based boost control now. I see them on ebay new for $379 can you do a deal like that so I can get from some one I know?

BTW--- New 18 inch tires with 245's on them and doing 50 MPH droped to thrid gently then went WOT and it spun the tires!! First time 3rd gear ever lit up like that. The extra boost in the mid - high end makes a huge difference. Its holding 21-22+ now steady as can be no more spikes its just where I set it to.

jc850... you might as well just buy the spring from PTP and put it in the WGA you have now. Should do just as fine.

And yes alot of people were worried about the rubber diaphram holding up well its plenty strong enough no doubt now that I have seen it compared to others.

The best part about this is with a normal manual boost controller, you can take the car in to ur local dodge dealer, remove the T for the MBC and u car now looks stock. As long as they don't 'road test' the car, they'd never know a thing!!
