I just got an email from a salesman at a local dealership who I asked to let me know when he got the prices. I'm impressed; the Magnum RT in Canada will be 36,995, about 3 grand less than I figured they'd put it. This puts it just a few grand higher than the Dodge Ram quad cab/Hemi I'd been considering. Beauty!
Too bad I can't delete the leather seats option (I hate leather seats).
I just don't like the feel, the sound, the sliding around, and the heat in the summer (ooh, peel those legs off). Usually, I'd add cold in the winter, but heated seats kind of makes that moot.
Personally, I'd like a car with NO special options...no heated seats, no power windows, no cruise, no air, no power seats; just a cheap price, and a car that goes fast/handles well/stops fast. The rest is just fluff that car companies use to soak more money out of us.
I'm sure some of you do. I'm sure you like a car that drives itself while you enjoy a double latte mocha and eat a big cheesburger too. And if you want all the toys, you should be able to pay to have them. Likewise, I should have the choice NOT to pay the premiums for the niceties. Is that a problem?
Some of the best muscle cars ever made were the 'stripper' cars with bench seats, no power options, and big fat engines. I'm not saying that we should go that far; I prefer power steering and brakes. But the beauty was you could order up a car any way you wanted it, and if you wanted to spend money only on options that made the car go fast or handle better, you could. It's not a new concept, just one that is less common now that manufacturers have the public brainwashed into thinking they need every little gadget available on their cars.
I don't think that the car companies are using the options to soak up all our money. I think that they offer the most popular options and dont bother to make a production process for the one guy in canada that doesnt want a/c or cruise control.

Sorry, I've got to disagree with that statement. Relatively speaking, the cost to build ANY model of car is not much different. Other than some extra steel costs, how much more do you think it costs Dodge to build a Magnum than, say, a Caravan, or a Neon for that matter? A car company makes very little on a car like a Neon, but on a car they can load up with options, they make a bundle. This is why car makers LOVE SUVs so much. Why not just offer the base model Magnum with a Hemi option?? Because they want YOUR MONEY.
This isn't just my opinion. If you ever get a chance, read John Z. DeLorean's book, 'On a Clear Day You Can See GM'.
I believe most car options are based on what the 'majority' wants. Probably based on surveys and past buying statistics and options found on similar cars.
