Default Myths about shurflo pumps and methanol

This post is simply to provide information about pumps used for W/I and get the facts behind some others claims.

Quote:
This quoted section should take precedence over anything listed below.

I just want to point out shurflo requires that ALL there pumps even if they are chemical compatible with methanol not be ran with more than 50/50 mix due to risk of fire.

Depending on model you use there are several that internal seals and wetted part are 100% methanol compatible but, The motor of all shurflo pumps are not CLASS I explosion proof and therefore the pump is not compatible with 100% methanol.

DO NOT PUMP FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS
DO NOT PUMP MORE THAN 50/50 MIX OF ALCOHOL AND WATER
MORE THAN 50% ALCOHOL IS A FLAMMABLE LIQUID

The ones with Viton valves, Santoprene diaphragm can handle 50/50 without issue. The issue is the viton valves enlarge with long time exposure to 100% methanol. (Tend to leak after about a year or so) Just replace it with buna-n valves and your set. Santoprene in itself is 100% methanol compatible so you will not have a issue.

Pumps with the Buna valves, Geolast diaphragm like the ones we use the seals are 100% methanol compatible. They have no problems running 100% methanol, The big thing about the claim of no flammable fluid is a potential leak into the motor which makes sparks internal when it's spinning. (Fire hazzard) And they will not take any responsibility for that. It is not that the pump cannot physical handle it.

As far a psi handling it's the nylon housing vs a poly housing which makes it stronger. We have run a M1 nozzle for hours with no issues at over 200+psi your not going to bust one of these housing on a W/I set up with any shurflo pump period. You can't make enough pressure to do it.

And PSI of the pumps is solely based on nozzle size. But anyone can buy a 150 switch and place it on any 8000 series pump. Read our test of pump pressure vs nozzle size and you will understand how this really works. We have stated the shared parts of all the 8000 series pumps in multiple post for all to read.

See what's the same on all the pumps
Nylon body Buna-N valves, GeolastĀ® diaphragm This what gives it the ability to take the 100% methanol.

They will never recommend you running this because it is a flamible liquid. Keep in mind that 1000's upon 1000's of these pumps are in use right now running 100% methanol without any issusus and those are the ones that you should be running 50/50 with. Grand nationals are a prime example.

As far as AMPS the pumps handle, Well here's the fact it is strictly based on PSI output of the pump period. The higher the psi the more amps drawn. The standard pump run at higher than 10mps everytime you go above around 110psi. And are rated at more than 20amps, That's what the internal overload switch is for that comes with all these pumps.

Quote:
It was designed to run higher amps (10 amps) vs the other pumps on the market

??? Why does it have a 10amp fuse is designed to run higher? All other 8000 series run at well above that at greater than 100psi. They have been used this way for years for sprayer applications and work perfectly.

Example
150 PSI High Pressure Pump

To verify which pump you have simply use this guide.

Shurflo Data Sheets

This is strait from the the company and this was just the 8000 seriers there are many more that can run methanol. So I don't know if you consider this a public claim but it's not top secret or anything.
Quote:
Its the only pump that shurflo will publicly say you can run a mix of alcohol in

???

Thank you for your e-mail and interest on SHURflo products.

Attached you will find a couple data sheets for pumps that you can use with Methanol.

Bottom line you want to run 100% methanol with no issues use buna-n valves

Please feel free to state any issues with leaking you have had with any type of mix over the last year. I know we have only replaced around 7 pumps since we have been doing kits.

Added specs of new pump.

Unfortunately, we do not have the data sheet for model # 8030-811-239, but
the specs are:

12 VDC, 10 Amps Max., 150 PSI Max, Viton valves, Nylon body, Santoprene
Diaph. This pump can be use with some chemicals.

The other pumps are: 12 VDC, 45 or 60 PSI Max., Nylon body, Buna valves,
Geolast Diaph.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you,

The only real diffence I see is the 10amp rating and fuse and the 150psi switch there might be a few other tweaks but nothing ground breaking.
