Weird transmission problem

I got an email from my friend today, he is having a strange problem with putting his car in gear. Here is a part from the email he sent me:

ill describe what happened to me: its in the drive after I had driven it in, so I started it up put it in R and gave it gas and it starts to go forward as if it was still sitting in first, so I shift into N and back to R and she goes in reverse. Then when I hit the street I put it in 1 and it just revs, so I put it in N and back to 1 and she starts to move

Im at a loss on this one. Any input at all will be helpful. Thanks in advance.
