trouble putting into 2nd gear

I have a generic short throw shifter and prothane bushings on both ends of the selector cables, and whenever I go to shift to second, it "clicks" once like all the other gears, but I have to pull it down a bit more to make it "click" again for it to totally lock into gear. if i don't pull it down to the second click, it will grind horribly

any idea what this problem is? it doesn't do it in any other gear.

Maybe the cables need to be adjusted on the shifter end?

Or just ditch the generic and buy a Maddog STS...
