Default trans issues?

My friend is having some problems with his trans and I really cant pin point the problem since Im not trans guy.

The problem is the car is like locked into 1st gear, and he cant not move the shifter to 3-4-5-R. 2nd gear is still 1st gear also. Another thing is when you try and turn the car off in nuetral the car stalls when you release the clutch pedal. We have never tried adjusting the pedal or the linkage. The car is still on the stock clutch with 35k on it but the car has been pretty abused. Could it be the clutch? the fork? or is it something more serious? any info would help thanks alot guys.

Can the shifter be moved around when the car is off? If so it sounds like the fork, mine is getting clunky when down shifting and at times it likes to inch forward in traffic, sure sign the clutch is not disengagin but is fine when the car is off.

If he cannot move the shifter at all then I have no idea, something is major messed up. But it would not hurt to start with the basics, adjust the pedal and go from there.

"The Cobalt firmly grabs you and whisks you along your way instantly. It does so with authority and poise, but while slipping relatively unnoticed through traffic, never being violent, or dare I say it, frightening. When you ask the SRT-4 to take you somewhere fast, it punches you in the face, throws you over its shoulder, and runs, screaming, so quickly that its tires can barely keep up."
