hey guys, my 05 with 28k is having tranny noises. its like a tire noise or groaning from all gears at all speeds. i changed the tranny fluid with amsoil. any ideas whats wrong? and how to fix it? this is my only car and i cant afford to be stranded. all help is appreciated...
Tire like noise is most commonly associated with a wheel bearing failure. They say that if you jack up that side and place your hands on the 12 and 6 o'clock positions, wiggle it and if it has a play then the bearing is bad.
Wheel bearings can be purchased from Auto Zone or Napa for $50-$60. Its recommended (although not required) that you purchase a new hub as well since they usually need to be replaced at the same time.
well here is the kicker. i jacked the car up by the lower controls arms and drove the car at 100mph then pushed in the clutch and the noise wa definately coming from the center of the car inline with the transmission. as far as the wheel bearings in the beginning of when the noise started, if i made a right turn and drove straight, the noise would go away and come back only if i made a left turn. there has also been times where i would drive the piss out of the car through corners and the noise would go away but would be there the next day. is there any test i can do to determine if it is indeed something transmission related? thanks for your help. i really appreciate it.
well it is not the wheel bearings, there is no play in th wheels. while inspecting the bearings, i did see the lca bushings torn. so i am having them replaced next week. would torn bushings cause the noise that i am experiencing? also it rained a few days ago and the 2 days it was wet, the noise wasnt there.
The LCA's only pivot up and down as the suspension compresses. The noise you describe is a rotating noise right? So your culprits are narrowed down to which ever parts spin.
are the axles supposed to have any play? i grabbed both driver and passenger axles by the shaft. i got movement in and out, not much but there was movement. is this normal? is there any other way to test axles?
