Default strange noise

I've noticed a strange noise that is going to be a little hard to describe. The noise occurs at slow speeds, usually light throttle in 1st gear.

Its sort of a growl that happens when the car is sorta of accelling and deceling... like going through a parking lot.

I heard the same noise on a 89 ShelbyZ i had with a 525 trans years ago.

I'm pulling the tranny to replace the clutch and would like to figure this out before i do. Something else i've noticed is a high pitched noise, usually in 4th, when its cold.

any ideas? i know this wasn't the best describption

does it sound like a metal on metal grinding? Does it go away when the wheels are straight? Is it coming from the front of the car? Could be Hub Bearings.
