Legions car had proper breaking and made around 420whp/490tq close numbers not sure exactly. Called me from the track and said the clutch slipped he thought and was gonna let it cool. Next pass shifting into 4th the clutch exploded at around 100mph at the track shooting the clutch out the hood of the car. SBC Stage 5 Modular.
Honestly its hard for me to believe these clutches are bad because there have been prolly at least 400-500 of these sold and it seems like only a few have had problems and some worse than others. I made 493whp/480tq on mine and ran 10.81 on this clutch. It makes me think either in-proper install first then maybe a bad batch of clutches. I am jus stumped on why this keeps happening

legion, i just flipped through a few pages of your posts but couldn't find any info about that clutch. what happened?
We had the car at the track making some test and tune passes and were having problems with what felt like clutch slippage. We would get the car back to the pits though and would not smell anything. We made a few phone calls to some people running the same clutch and were convinced that it was a possible traction issue. It didn't seem that could be the case but we kept running it. We made a few good 11.8 passes on it with some terrible 60 times (traction issues) after the calls so we never thought it had anything to do with the clutch.
Well we decide to run it one more time that night and at the 1000' mark the car would not go into 4th gear and then grenaded. Luckily the flywheel when up down and forward instead of at the firewall. It when right through the hood and would have easily went right into the cabin if it hit in the right place. We had a good laugh about it and it was a good photo op for the track goers that night. Now it is all behind us and an auto trans will be installed in the place of the pile of scrap.

damn dude.
just wondering, can you claim damages like that on your comp deductible?
remember though, the few that failed will get more exposure on here than the hundreds that are fine.
Yeah that really is the truth.
The real issue I have with these is that they rate the stage 5 clutches at 650 lb/ft of torque and I don't really think these flywheels will take that kind of power. I don't have anything to back that up but 2 of them exploded. Basically it comes down to a safety issue. If you run one get a scatter shield for it or get a non modular setup with an sfi rated flywheel for it. I learned the hard way.
I have talked to south bend about my clutch also. They offered to rebuild it on my dollar and try to salvage some of the parts. Obviously there is nothing left to rebuild. I am still pissed about this thing destroying my car but I never expected it to be southbend's or anyone's problem but my own. I will just try and warn people about the signs of this problem and steer them away from these clutches.
Yeah also note that this was the second one that was installed in my car. The other one made it about 15 miles or so before the pressure plate cracked.
