my 3rd gear went out a couple of months after i got the car and i took the MBC off of it and took it in and had my whole transmission replaced and ive had no problems sence and that was back in sept. of 04 bought it in july of 04 i just told my mom and dad it got wore out because i it was my first time driveing a stick shift all i can say is 3rd gear WOT is a bitch if you miss it
I'm still waiting and hoping the Dodge does something to correct this problem. I have an 05 and have been having problems with my 3rd gear. won't go in at first tries to pop out when putting it in and so on. My only fear is when I do go to take it to the dealer tehy will not warrent it due to my STSand many other mods. Has anyone had any issues w/ the dealer and a STS for this problem?
At first they told me that was the reason...I suggest to take it off.
Heres my damage:
Broken Shift Fork
Damaged Shift Fork
Worn Shift Fork
Missing tooth on a gear
Missing tooth on the Input Shaft
Now Im waiting to know if the District Manager will approve the warranty work now that theyve found out its completely different from last time.
Ive heard that the Input Shaft issue could be caused from improper installation of the Clutch (which was installed by them) and could be a Major factor when it comes to the other issues.
Also, I told the Asst Manager last week about the Brass Shift Forks and he didnt want to believe that they would do that ...Today, he told me I was right and they did in fact use Brass.
I have an 05 SRT-4 ACR with 15,000 miles on it and have problems. Under fulll acceleration shifting from 2nd to 3rd proves to be a skill as it wont go in easily. It seems the more RPM's you give it the harder you have to shift it. I've never once had mine pop out, but indeed have ground it a few times by having it not go fully in. My SRT-4 has never been to the track and I've never done a burnout, so it's not abused in that sense.
I am now contacting my Lawyer...the bill is $4000 this time for a new tranny...to fix a 7 month/12k mile car that the warranty has been denied. Ive got my gloves on, lets fight!
This last Thursday was the third time I took my 05 in for third gear problems. The first time was about 1800 miles with my being blocked out of shifting into third gear during normal driving. The dealer found nothing. After seeing this forum thread, I took it back in at around 19K due to my having the continuing problem with third both up shifting and down shifting. Again the dealer found nothing and said that I was making up problems. I told them that it would be their responsibility if I was in a wreak due to my being blocked out of third gear when I needed some extra speed and ended up with no power at all since third gear was blocked. I called Detroit and got a guy that told me to take it back in to the same dealer and leave it until they found the problem. Yesterday, the service manager called, saying that he was driving the car on a residential street and got blocked out of third gear! He now has an inquiry into engineering as to what he should do next. Will keep this thread posted on the results!
I bought my 05' srt at the end of june. within two weeks of buying the car the tranny went out. the dealer claims its the sycros in it. so the dealer rebuilt the tranny completely, (supposely). Now its sept and the tranny went out again. now there talking all this warrenty crap. my car is basically stock with just minor upgrades.WTF is up with these trannys. I hear the 04`s didnt have this problem. Is that tru? There should have been a recall on the 05's.
Well my two cents 28,000 mi and my trans pops third and sometimes grinds third I'm taking it to the dealer asap. Btw who would honestly think that pushing ur trans harder and "breaking in a trans" after a few thousand mi. Also as many have asked who here has tried a perfomance werks trans.
Good news, I am taking my 05 in today for a complete 3rd gear rebuild at the authorization of Corporate. The dealer got the word a couple of days ago. Hope this fixes it!
mine is apparently getting worse now. used to be days could go by without any problems, now it's EVERY day I have a hard time upshifting or downshifting into third. Usually several times a day now.
So... I will probably take it to the dealer soon and see what they say, since now I can be almost POSITIVE it will do it on a dealer test ride.

SRT-4 interiors are teh slow , but man I do miss my Neon!
Last week I shifted from second into third, put it in, and there was no gear behind it. Shifted back into second, nothing there either . So, I coasted into a little side street, ripped out the console, cables are good, check under the hood, too dark out to see anything. Had it towed to Dodge, they claimed they replaced the shifter, and the linkage. Got the car back, now I am having trouble shifting into 3rd gear. Usually only when I downshift, but occasionally when I am upshifting too. Shift into third, feels good, let off the clutch, and it grinds, and it throws the car and shifter into neutral. Put it back again, and it's just fine until the next attempt.
It is currently at Dodge, and I hope to hear back fairly soon.
Stats:
Car was purchased new March, 2005 by me.
No problems until last week (was at about 25.5k miles).
Have done 1 tranny fluid change (at 18k miles, used the correct stuff ATF+4 and the friction modifier)
Car has had stock shifter in it for both these problems.
My sig is pictures of it last week on the tow truck at Naples Dodge. (it was 3 am)
Has anyone filed a complaint with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration? I'm not having 3rd gear problems... yet, but all of you that have had those problems need to file a complaint:
Ok, guys! All of the third gear blocking has an apparent solution. I just got my 05 back after four days at the dealer and he showed me the problem. The third gear shift fork is cast and the casting flash was not completely ground off near a sliding pawl. Sometimes this pawl would slide right by the lump of brass and sometimes it would catch on it, causing the blocking. The dealer chose to replace the fork rather than clean up the casting flash and eliminate the problem. But after 24 hours it still is working with no blocking.
