Default How to properly torque axle nut?

My torque wrench only goes up to 150 ft lbs. My impact gun goes to 220 ft lbs.

The axle nut needs to be torqued to 180 ft lbs. I used the gun to torque the nut but I have no way of knowing how much torque it actually applied.

Is there a easy way of knowing or checking with the tools I have without having to buy another torque wrench?

My biggest fear right now is that I slaved over changing out these damn wheel bearings and I'm afraid they'll go bad again if these axle nuts are not properly torqued.

I usually just snug them tight with an impact. Never had a problem.

Unfortunately, I don't see a way you can properly check without a torque wrench. It sucks, but if you want it done right, its what you have to do.

I wasn't sure if there was some calculative method for torquing based on turns.

Like if I did 150 ft lbs, would another quarter turn or half turn equal another 35 ft lbs?

Honestly, I dont think it would turn from 150 -180... if it did very very little.

set the impact gun on "kill", and don't worry about it.

I've asked the same question before. Everyone told me give it hell. The bearing design will stop it from getting over tightened.

Thanks guys.

Oh and thanks Pimpazz. I saw a post you made a few weeks ago about a clunking noise and you suggested the ball joint pinch bolt. After putting everything back together after the wheel bearing install, I had that knock. I made sure both pinch bolts were torqured to the specified 70 ft lbs but I still had the knock. Torqued them to 90 ft lbs and knock was gone.

Blast that shit with an impact while holding the axle to keep it from turning. You'll be fine if the it's a decent impact. You still have a cotter pin there as extra safety in the event that it comes loose to keep it from spinning off the axle. You won't be able to over-tighten that nut without knowing something isn't right though.

yeah but on many things torque specs are for dummys, like a couple of people that snaped VC bolts. I dont torque things like waterpumps,VC's,accessory mounting brackets,Axle nuts, strut bolts, motor mounts, ect.. Most of them just get snug, not super human tight(except for the axle nut which I hit with the impact)
