Default HELP! I F'd up Removing Axle Seal

I need help from any dodge techs or tranny poeple. I removed the axle seal from my transmission but i also damaged the thin metal behind the seal. I tore that up pretty good. My question is, what do i have to do to fix this? Any help would be appreciated.

Default you too??

Yeah - been there, done that....I did not realize there was that thin metal shield behind the axle seal as well....I bent mine back as best I could, popped in the new seal and called it a day - not sure what else you can do

I think the piece that got messed up is an oil slinger and its replaced by removing the differential. I could not tell by the image if you can get it straightened out using a hooked nose plier or something similar...............You may want to bite the bullet and pull the trans and get it to a tech who can remove the differential and replace the slinger if you can not do this. Also, you may be able to continue on and install the seal and button it up for temporary and drive it a short distance to a good repair shop to avoid towing charges.

Can't see what you did from the picture. How did you do it? Putting the axle back in?

He popped the seal to change it but in the process of doing so he also hooked the oil slinger which is very close behind the seal and is easy to hook if not very careful.

Glad I saw this as I may be replacing the left axle real soon.

The FSM says this...

"Left halfshaft:
While applying outward pressure on joint by hand,
dislodge inner tripod joint from differential side gear
by striking outward with a punch. When removing
tripod joint and halfshaft, do not let spline or snap
ring drag across axle seal
.

Great. I just yanked mine out earlier tonight in the dark. Can't wait to see up inside there in the morning.

Page 21-66 of the service manual shows an image and directions of how to remove the seal but IMO it does not give a warning about the slinger right behind it????

HCCFAN, take pictures good or bad and see if you can capture how close it is. It may be a good topic for a HOW-TO

Mine with 73k miles is also begining to weap a tiny amount on the driver side.
Probably pulling the axles twice (one for the clicking CV joint and once for the clutch) didn't help.
So I've decided to just monitor it and also check the tranny fluid and see how it goes.
So far so good though after two months since I first noticed it.
I've not had to add any tranny fluid with a turkey baster yet.
And only one or two tiny drops of fluid on the floor after a week.
Sometimes it may be better to "just leave it alone".

The How To I was using on tranny removal didn't say much about it so you're probably right.

Update.......
Goodnews. I was able to staigten the metal. It wasnt perfect but it looked ok. I then installed the seal and test drove the vehical. After about 10min of hard driving, everything looks dry, no leaks. I dont know if this will last or not but at least its driveable. Thanks to Turbojack and all others that helped out.

Nice that you are driving. I spent the better part of the day trying to get that motherfucking transmission back in the car. It's there now, I think. It's just not bolted in. I can't believe none of my fingers are broken. What a pain in the ass.
On the bright side, that little metal ring is unscaved.
