Default Engine oil used a tranny fluid ??!!!

OK, reading along some posts on this forum has left me completely suprised at something. It seems that some people are either using Mobil 1 10w40 motor oil, or even Mobil 1 75w90 gear oil as their tranny fluid ??? What gives with this, as I can't imagine this being used instead of SOME kind of ATF-4 ?

I would never recommend using used oil in anything.

Some manual transmissions just take normal gear oil, some even use normal 5w30. You're never going to want to use used engine oil for transmission oil because of the combustion byproducts in the oil that the transmission shouldn't be seeing.

The recommended fluid should also be used.....

I guess it's possible if your trans takes 5w30, throwing in used Mobil 1 5w30 would do the trick.....still pretty stupid if you ask me.

LOL... used ? My post doesn't even contain that word. I would never use used lube of ANY kind. I was talking about using new Mobil 1.
Thanks for being willing to respond and give your opinion though !

Ya but your title says used. GreaseMonkey didn't realize you were trying to say "used as tranny fluid"

Getrag manual transmissions work great with a synthetic motor oil. When I tried Rotella synthetic in the SRT-4 trans, the shifting became pretty poor.

Stick with RP Synchromax.

My bad. If your title would have read engine oil used as tranny fluid, I probably would have picked up on it.

IIRC, the manual transmissions that were on the Escort and Ranger used 5w30. Most heavy truck transmission take SAE 30 synthetic, but those are straight cut gears and the transmissions don't have any synchronizers besides the synchro used in the back box for the high and low range.

Check this out:
Mopar Manual Transmission Fluid 95-05 Neon, 03-05 SRT-4 - 03-05 Dodge SRT4 Drivetrain Parts, Clutches, Axles, Short Throw Shifters, Booger
Bottom paragraph states:
Quote:
Please note: This is the fluid recommended by Mopar for the vehicles above. If you drive your car very hard, a Chrysler Engineer that we work with quite a bit has recommended the use of Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w/30 with ZDDP or Zinc dithiophosphate which helps protect the gear surfaces better under high heat conditions. You can find the ZDDP labeling on the back of the container.

The reason they used ATF + friction modifier from teh factory is because it was easy and cheap since the SRT-4's were going down the assembly line with the reg. Neons...

Gonna change every spring regardless of how many miles. Cheap insurance, imo.

I am really thinking about switching over... Anyone else made the switch to the 10w-30 High Mileage?
Or any input on the subject matter?
