Default FX400 Q's

Two versions of this, one with steel flywheel, one with aluminum flywheel.

Supposing you already have an aluminum flywheel from an FX400, could you buy the steel flywheel versions, remove that flywheel and use the aluminum one instead?

IE - are the bolt holes in the same place...or do they come apart in the same way???

That would be a possibility, or what we could do is sell you our unofficial "repair" kit which is the clutch assembly without a flywheel and includes the replaceable steel friction insert for your existing flywheel along with a new TOB. The repair kit for the FX400 comes to $695.00.

Thats correct. The pressure plates are the same and bolt up the same on the modulars unit as well as the non-mod units. So if you disassembled the steel modular unit, you could bolt the cover up to your existing CM aluminum flywheel.

If I understand correctly...

I could purchase a Steel Flywheel version of the FX400. The final built assembly from CM of this modular clutch is identical to that of the FX400 with the Aluminum Flywheel. [Just flywheels are different.] I take my FX400 clutch out of the box! I remove the four bolts holding the Steel Flywheel to the rest of the assembly.

...and then...

I bolt my Aluminum Flywheel to the crank, and then use the four bolts that I removed from the rear of the assembly to put the now Steel Flywheel-less FX400 assembly onto my Aluminum Flywheel.

...and then...

I put the car back together and go drag racing!

Yes, from the sounds of it, you understand completely. But the modular kit lists at $795 while the repair kit will run you $695, also the repair kit comes with the flywheel insert to ensure a correct step hight.

Ok, so has the FX400 clutch changed???

See, the flywheel is totally different on my "new" FX400 versus the one I used to have. I was under the impression this would be an exact replacement, and it's just not...leaving me with some questions...

I was expecting the flywheel to have 4 bolts through the back, which would mean the rest of the entire assembly would be "complete" - but this new FX400 I have has the flywheel bolted to the assembly, and you bolt that whole thing onto the crank as opposed to just the flywheel.

Anyhow...

Question: If I do not have a proper alignment tool, how exactly do I ensure the clutch disc is in the right spot before tightening the pressure plate bolts? <smile>

Oh, I found the alignment tool. It was tucked up and away in the cardboard in the box.

Well, I guess that will help!!!
