Went to my local Lowes and Home Depot today to get some Methyl Hydrate. Both Places don't carry it anymore and instead carry Methyl Ethyl Ketone (according to the 2 people i talked to in the paint section). Can anyone verify if that stuff is indeed a replacement for Methyl Hydrate or just another product they happend to carry? I'm pretty sol now if they're no longer going to carry Methyl Hydrate, since my only option after that is buying 10+ bottles of HEET. This was in Portland, Maine.
MEK is only good for taking the paint off your car. It will give you cancer, it will destroy rubber and latex, its an all around bad chemical. do not use it as an octane boost or anything for the inside of your motor. it will eat your injectors and it will remove the lubrication off the cylinder walls.
yeah i read up a little on it after and found its a Butanone which is an manufactured organic compound. Nothing near what the name may suggest. I just though it was strange the gentleman in the paint dept. said it was what they carry instead of methyl hydrate now. which really sucks for me. needless to say I went to walmart and bought all their HEET lol
also look for heet windshield de-icer concentrate in the 32 OZ bottle it is pure methanol and a whole lot cheaper than 12 OZ bottles of heet gas additive

MEK is some bad stuff, at work we use it for fuel systems maintenance.
Yeah, MEK is pretty much the anti-christ. It's some bad ju-ju homie. Unless you desire to release the fires of hell within your car, I suggest staying away from it. Snow Performance has a 60/40 mix they call Boost Juice..look into that.

Methyl Ethyl Ketone is violently flamable and used in the production of some nasty explosives. I'd never get that stuff near my car. We use it at work to clean out large industrial printers because it eats dried ink like nobody's business.
