The cummins M80 They had could develope over 56000 psi in the feed rail. I've ben workng with the IH DT466E's for years now and I thought those where getting a bit over board. The new Mercedes engine in the frieghtliner our new engine of choice.
No more mufflers. What looks like a muffler is really a catyletic converter. They use high EGT's, a burst of compressed air and a shot of fuel to burn off all the particulates caught up in the cat. Yup. The muffler now has it's own fuel injector. If EGT's are not high enough the clean burn cycle will never happen. At that point the engine de-rates for a few hours. After that and a few warning lights it just shuts down. Then I get to come out with my lap-top and force a cycle to run. Sounds like a lot of $$$.
These cat's also have to be replaced every 5 years or so depending on the fuel and driving conditions. So it's a $5000 muffler job.

You can see where WI might benifit one end and hurt another. Guess one would have to figure out what is more cost effective.
