^I agree on gasoline applications.
I have seen some truly crazy stuff as far as the amount of liquid used by people going with massively oversized nozzles and aggressive settings, and still no hydrolocking. You almost have to try. Hard start issues and quenching are not exactly desirable though.
Having said all that, a solenoid is the way to go, as you dont have to worry so much about cracking pressure, and the right solenoid is basically bomb-proof for reliability. But no matter what, I do recomend something if there is any chance of siphoning or gravity feed.
