Default Are the stock head bolts re-usable?

I rember seeing this question a while back, but can't find it, and don't rember if they are. I'm getting ready to finally throw my fully built head on, and curious....either way I may pick up some ARP's, but figured I'd ask first.

I wouldn't risk it even if they were reusable.

Ya, well I'm probably planning on going with the ARP's, but was just curious.

I think I read about a few guys re-using them. I just don't trust them enough as it is. If it was just a headgasket, maybe. I am going to put in DCR or ARP when I do my timing belt, H/G, cams, and gears. Unless the car sells first.

they are re-usable , but you will most likely be doing a headgasket on your car in another 10,000 miles

they're totally reuseable if you check the threads for stretch and they pass.

a thread test on a torque multiplied bolt/fastener is not a true test. Anything torque multiplied or overtorqued intentionally must pass NDI to really be considered safe. like tim said, you'll be doing the h/g in 10000 miles if you don't do it right the first time.

that's why they make stretch gauge, because even torque readings aren't correct if the wrong lube is used. Even common motor oil can throw off reading by 10-15% easy.

checka the threads and if they're money you can reuse.

Sure you can. If you're driving a near stock car and doing the work yourself and they aren't stretched you'll probably be okay. With that said, I wouldn't reuse them since they aren't that expensive. The problem with torque-to-yield bolts is that even if they aren't stretched they may not be able to provide the same clamping force once reused (this is even an issue with new bolts). At stock power levels there usually isn't enough cylinder pressure to cause problems but if you're putting on a built head which insinuates significantly higher power output when combined with other upgrades I'd look into a quality head stud kit or at the very least a new set of OEM bolts.

do not waste your time... either get new stock head bolts (like 4 bucks a piece) or get some arp studs.

The original question of this thread was "Are the stock head bolts re-useable"

And the answer is Yes they are. As long as the threads arnt stretched.
