Default Rusty 2.0 cams ok?

A friend gave me some 2.0 cams from his old first gen. They have a little bit of rust on all the lobes. Can I take this to a shop and have it machined or should I just get some 2000 grit sandpaper, or should I just go buy a pair for $40 bucks?

Thanks
Bryant

Why not just spend the $40? I would worry about the rust flaking off.

If it's surface rust, take it off. Do not put rusty shit in your car, though.

run some junk yard pos 2.0 cams in my car for 10k miles.iam in the middle of a rebuild and had the journals in the head checked and they are good. so my nasty cams didnt mess things up to bad.

cams were rusty as fuck when i pulled them out of the neon so i cleaned them up best i could with break cleaners and newspaper. u could try to have a shop hot tank it for u or something.

just make sure the journal surfaces on the cams are aa shinny and clean as possible because if the journals in the head get scratched up TOO badly a new head could be in your near future.

I wouldn't install them with rust them either...

I'd get a set of 2000 grit sand paper or some emery cloth if you can get you hands on it(emery cloth would be better) and get the rust off. Use light pressure and water if using the 2000 grit sand paper to clean the journals. Then spray with brake clean to get the water off. Put a light coat of oil on it to prevent the metal from rusting again if you plan on storing them till install.
