Default Got a problem and I'm confused

I recently replaced the head on my car and everything is back together as it should be. The car is timed correctly but it won't start. When I turn the key it grumbles like its trying to turn on but is choking. However if I pull out the #1 sparkplug it fires right up. little history, the car sat for about a year before I replaced the head. Is there something that I'm missing here?

ok so it wont start period until you pull out the #1 spark plug? well i would double check timing make sure the cams and crank are at tdc. the crank can be tdc but the cams could be off. if that would be the case the car would run funny and idle very hard. check the #4 spark plug too since they are on the same stroke. the car can run on 1 good cylinder on the same stroke but sound like shit. i would take the valve cover off and inspect to make sure the cams on #1 are tdc. making sure the crank is at tdc as well. if they are aftermarket cams make sure the cam magnet is placed at the 4'o clock and 5'o clock position. check your coil and spark plug wires as well. are you pulling any engine codes?
